Shake down complete and I really really like it. 10 speed downtube friction shifting is melted butter compared to the same shifter and rd w a 7 speed setup. No jumps. No dead space.

Chain line is pretty great on the outer ring position with a 107 mm spindle.

Husband picked up the “88 Purple Haze yesterday off ebay. Needs a little work, but I’ve already taken it for a spin around the neighborhood several times.

Husband’s reward is that he now “inherits” the Blue Smoke, even though he’s afraid it’s a delicate little thing and the thin tires and down tube shifters worry him.

Am I reading this right that it was manufactured in mid 1987? Seems odd that it has an “88 paint color. Unless the purple was also available in “87 and my guides have failed me. Left it dirty because it’s easier to read the serial number. Not because I was being lazy and didn’t wash it until the next day.

^^^^^^ Just like with motor vehicles, model year changes start sometime late in the previous year. I forget the particular SN scheme in this case, but if L means the 12th fortnight (sounds like a top-ten rejected book title idea, but I digress...), then yes, that's fairly "early" (early June) in '87 to expect to see an '88 roll off the line (so to speak). But if it's the 12th month, then it's perfectly sensible that a December '87 build would be for an '88 bike.

The decoder I was looking at seemed to imply that it could go either way--fortnight or month--with no information on which of the two would apply. As an accountant, I love vague information, so this made me deliriously happy! o_O

12th Fortnight sounds like a historical novel written in serial format with each episode numbered accordingly. They better fall in love by the 26th episode or it'll be like groundhog year and they have to start all over again in January with a new meet cute.

There's a 3rd possible interpretation, that places L as being August. That's right in the gray transition period where it could be either a 1987 or 1988 model. Regardless, the purple smoke paint scheme, Unicrown fork and 600 Ultegra components confirm that it is a 1988 model.

How is L August? What's the convention for that? I'm not doubting, I'm just curious on the methodology. Three week production schedule instead of two week?

This possibility uses a month sequence of A, B, D,E,G, H, K, L, M, N, P, S. It appears to have originated with Raleigh in the early 1970s and may be the basis for some other formats, including Nomura. I mention it as a alternate format for manufacturer N(1) in my Asian Serial Number Guide stickee.

Took a bit of creative logistics to get it secured and transported to me. Thanks to my wife for picking it up while she was in the area visiting family and friends.
Really clean bike. Just needs a few personal touches.

Hello all,

I recently joined this forum, primarily for this section, but I'm seeing so much good and helpful information on the forum as a whole. Without the boring details, I've had injuries that have caused my running days to be over, but I was told I can still ride a bike - hence the search began. For some reason all I could remember is walking through Olympic Sports here in the Seattle-Tacoma area (long since out of business) back in the 80s and drooling over the Ironman bikes on the floor. Well, I kept searching and last year finally found one in my size (58cm) locally. It was in pretty good shape overall and I was able to get it for a reasonable price, although the seller certainly knew what he had in the way of desirability for these bikes. So, I've been riding and researching and from what I can gather it appears that I may have a fairly rare bike. It's a white Centurion IM Dave Scott Master with the faded black smoke paint scheme (not gray), which in and of itself seems kinda rare. But also, it is a TG (welded) frame with no lugs. From photos posted here, it looks like the bike has more in common with the next generation Diamond Back TG Master than earlier 88-89 Centurions. So, I'm wondering if I have one of the last Centurion Dave Scott Masters ever made. I know this post is pretty useless without photos, but I don't have enough under my belt yet to post pictures. As soon as I'm there I'll post photos to get the expert's opinions. I'll also post the serial number.

One day maybe I'll have a Comp TA. It seems to be very similar to a 85 IM but with Tange 2 and earlier 600 bits. What are the bars and stem?. The bars look deep like what I had on my Turbo.

They are the original SR Custom bars and stem. I don't recall what was on my old Turbo. I sold it due to it being too small. Bummer. It was just as nice as this one.
