Crescent Bike, new to me.

Howdy

Found this old bike on craigslist. Never heard of the brand before. The owner didn't talk much. He did say he bought it brand new back around the early 1970's. He said it was the short wheelbase model.

Most of the old bikes I find are not rideable, and are need of full servicing. However this beauty is in excellent riding condition as bought. I bet the old guy had it serviced before he put it up for sale. Everything works and works very well.

I just took it out for a spin and at first it seemed a little twitchy, compared to my Trek 400, but in half a mile I got adjusted to it and very much enjoyed the ride. It definitely rides like a lugged steel frame. On my uncertified and highly inaccurate bathroom scale the Crescent weighs exactly 2 lbs. less than my 1988 Trek 400. (21 lbs. versus 23 lbs.)

I am trying to attach a few pictures but don't have any idea what I am doing so we'll see.

If you post pics to your profile, we can add them to this discussion. The 10 post rule is an anti spam measure. You can also go to introductions and that will help you hit 10 posts.

Crescent is a Swedish manufacturer and it made a range of bikes. Given the weight your report, you likely have one of the good ones. Post some pics of the bike especially of the drive side and any tubing stickers.

Interesting bike. Swedish? I have seen Crescent brand before, but this one seems to be a good quality frame.

That is an awfully small frame. You didn't list your own height. The bars are awfully high. Just make sure the stem is well below the minimum insertion point.

"Go to introductions"? I'm not sure what that means.

You hardly ever see the two brake cable clips on the top tube positioned that unsightly way on the drive side. The cable is normally centered on top of the tube. I can think of one advantage: you might not get that annoying pinging sound from the housing hitting the tube during a ride due to the missing third (middle) clip.

-----

appears a model 318 or 319 of the 1974-75 time

tip: while the tubing and headset are BSC dimension the bottom bracket shell is likely to be metric ("french")

member styggno1 shall be able to enlighten...

Well you're at 10, so you're good to go, . There is also a forum for newbies to introduce themselves but why not just post the pics (from the drive side please showing all the components) as well as any tubing stickers.

I had a 24" Crescent long ago. It had tight geometry, with the wheel hitting the toeclip - not my favorite feature. Nervex lugs. I won some races on it - it was a good ride.

BTW, I had to wait another day after my tenth post to post pictures.

CliffordK,
Hello,
I don't how these pics appeared, but there they are. Yes it says Made In Sweden on the head tube. Small frame? I couldn't ride anything larger. Seller said it was 30.75" stand over height. Personally I prefer smaller size frames. My Trek 400 is 29.25" stand over and is the most comfortable road bike I've ever ridden.

Swedish goodness! I am jealous. Looks like several European market versions of components...brakes, ST Spirt...early Cyclone, Sugino Super Mighty?. Great stuff there...

Please lower the stem.

That SR model does not have an extra-long quill.

If you ever add toe-clips, be aware of the toe clip overlap with the front wheel. It can create a safety problem if you are not careful with your turns.

This is the first Crescent I have seen with Vitus tubing. The old Crescent Pepita model was Reynolds 531.

Nice find!

Yes, I am in south Tempe and the bike was in very far north Peoria. It was a 122 miles round trip to fetch it. If you saw the ad you might have realized the seller said a lot but really didn't give many facts about the bike. I had to have him go around the bike and take pictures of all the stickers, which thankfully he did.
When my wife gets home from work and see's another bike here I'm going to wish you had bought it.

Hello,
Everything on the bike has been left as I bought it. Haven't even wiped it with a soft rag. Due to shoulder injury and old age, and crankiness, I can't ride much with drop bars anymore.

There might be some shallow drop bars that might be better?

Incidentally, Crescent has the best orange paint color in my opinion. That might ruffle a few feathers.

Hope you survive being found out...

When you try to post photos, they go to your album linked above.

The system then puts in hyperlinks which it blocks for newbies. So, the photos end up in limbo.

Now looking at it on my laptop, this is even lovelier than I first thought. Plus some details in the components are really sharp. Great photography.

Question...what is the seatpost?

Neat bike with good components. The cable clip position is a bit unusual but Ive seen this set up before. Shimano designed clips where the cable had to run on the side of the top tube.

That seatpost says BREV. ITALY on one side and TTT on the other.
It's clean as a whistle and may not be original.
