quill stem for 31.8mm bars
I'd like to put Surly Truck Stop bars on my touring build, and the only classic looking quill stem I found was on ebay with a March delivery date. Any other reasonable options for this old/new stem combo?
Thanks, BT

Maybe one of the removable faceplate stems from Velo Orange (https://velo-orange.com/collections/...ceplate-31-8mm) or Crust (https://crustbikes.com/collections/s...-crust-ui-stem) would work? Unfortunately both sold out right now...

If you need height as well (and you don't care about asthetics as much), look for an Origin8 Profit. Only available in 90 or 110 extensions.

I'm going to try a quill stem extender. BTW the Truck Stop handlebars are on sale at Competitive Cyclist for $55.

Lots of choices on Ebay. But all of them are butt ugly. In fact I would go as far as to say all attempts to adapt 31.8mm bars to a classic quill stem bike will end up looking butt ugly.

Whew! the first ones are really horrible, the second ones are horrible and the third ones get here in April. I'll see how the simple solution works. I think a good stem clamp choice can soften the visuals, but that's TBD.

I also had this issue whilst modernising my 1990 Cannondale Black Lightning…
ended up with a expander as couldn’t find a quill that would do modern bars

The threadless adapter referenced in post #5 is the easiest/cheapest solution. With the right stem and some aesthetic spacers it can look pretty elegant too.

For sure they are not sleek but they are functional. Personally I prefer four bolts to adaptor, spacers, and ahead stem.
