No dents but a lot paint scraped off in places.
Be aware that geometry on Mercian's can be all over the place, many are custom sized.
Mine has a really long chain stays and wheelbase.
I did. That's actually how I happened upon this one and the lugwork and colors drew me in. The first one is nice, but didn't wow me. Plus it is a tad bit on the larger side, whereas the dented one looks pretty perfectly sized for me.

First, nice Mercian!

Secondly, that CL one almost looks a bit bigger than 57cm/22.5in. Very cool though. A little far of a drive...haha.

Then if you go out for frame setup, alignment, face/chase head, fork, and BB, then you have room for all that in the budget, at least compared to buying an originally-finished Mercian in excellent condition.

No need to verify, that is a Mercian Super lIght and that is a great price assuming no damage under that ugly paint.

Jdawg,
I am going to talk you off that ledge! Why not a Swiss brand that can be had a better price and is not frame challenged? Pics to come... Smiles, MH

Nice Swiss build

And lots of logos on the frame

Seat tube detail

Down tube decal detail

Fork detail

Head badge that only shows Othon's family crest
Ok J-Dawg, The War Department got wind of the Ciocc ,and she is fired up about all of the excess Vintage frames here. She says take the white ones out in the snow filled yard and get pics of them to sell! ( I'm not too sure about her marketing skills.) So let me know if the brother of the Trek might fit into your wheel house. 57cm with correct frame detail. And one that is again too tall for me to ride. If you pass on it it will go to the FS thread. Smiles, MH

This has been up for 3-4 months. I talked to the guy when it was first posted. It's an early 70's and it has been in a crash and there is a crack on the head lug (If I remember correctly). The repaint, the red flags, combined with the fact I stumbled across a Bianchi Superleggera game me enough reasons to not pursue this one. With how long it's been up he could probably be talked down a lot.

Interesting. Not a good place for a crack.

I’ve seen several Mercians lately that are nice but none really sucked me in until the neurotic little bent head tube one for some reason.

I get drawn to some very oddball frames...garage is full of a few...my Van Tuyl, the Faggin MadHonk has now, the challenged MBK that I have only found one single version of...

Maybe I think they need someone to want them...haha... like the dogs I pick to adopt...

She has no real skills except being sweet. No guard dog, she....

She shares her dad’s level of quirks (she is seriously dopey), but loves everyone she meets on walks!

All good, love that.

And make no mistake, her presence alone wards off plenty of bad ju ju, evil spirits, nefarious miscreants and much else that will never befall your hallowed ground.

Okay, so you've seen my '82 Mercian, right?

I bought this as a stripped frame and fork (no headset, not even bottle cage bolts!) for $50 off the iBOB list in late 2003 because I felt sorry for it. There is a nasty dent in the top tube that hasn't given me any trouble since I built the bike up in 2004. I acquired it before Mercian started charging for serial number lookups, AND they knew I had forwarded them some buyers and were kindly disposed to me. This one, 458th built in 1982, was built by no. 6, George Bryan, as a team-issue frame for the late Tom Mereness, who rode on the same Harvest/The Spoke/Mercian team as Marianne Martin who won the 1984 Women's Tour de France.

The bike you are looking at appears to include Superlight and other features, and is probably a one-off. It's a lovely bike, and I would suggest starting by washing it and then using Meguiar's polish on it, gently, and see what that gets you.

I can tell you that mine gives up NOTHING to any other bike I've ever ridden. It is THE stablest, most solid-feeling "fast" bike I've ever been on, and it feels like it's on rails when descending. It has the vaunted handling of the full-on Joe Starck-built Rivendell Road Custom I owned for a dozen years, but is zippier and more responsive, probably due to the standard-diameter 531C tubing and a tighter design. Its only competition in my stable is a magical Specialized Sirrus I acquired last year, and maybe someday I'll score a correct set of Campagnolo Super Record bits and restore it. Or not - it rides great with the mongrel mix of Sachs New Success, Dura-Ace, RX-100, 105 and 600 bits hanging on it.

I will let you know in a few hours whether it will get a bath at my house or elsewhere in the world...!

I'm almost done gathering the pieces for my red Mercian. I'm going Shimano 600 with an XTR midcage rear derailleur. It will be 8sp downtube shifters. The only parts I have not sourced is brake leavers.

I wish you Good luck on your bid.

Right now at $135.00 + shipping. Tough to resist.
What I have learned (and it took me a while for some reason), is that it doesn't matter if you "overpay" by $10, $50, $100, whatever for something that speaks to you. How long will you own/ride it? 5 years? 10 years? In the end it costs you a few dollars more per year. If you can't get $10 worth of enjoyment per year out of it, it didn't really speak to you to begin with. There are a few bike opportunities I would like to have back because I didn't want to spend a little extra.

Welp...I am now the owner of a 1980 something Mercian Super something with a dent and a stuck seat-post. Winning bid of $167.50, shipping of 50 and tax.

It might be a frame that you try and dislike, but it might be one that you build five different ways and keep for thirty years. It's worth the price to find out. Nice score!

Wasn't pleased by it going up almost to my maximum, but oh well... $30 in the overall scope of things.
