How many cyclists to cool down a nuclear reactor?

Hello,

I read that a reactor once it's in cold shutdown only requires about 1m3 of water per second.

Out of curiosity, how many cyclists would it take to provide that volume in case electric pumps aren't available?

Thank you.

"on flat ground the pump can achieve a 40 litres per minute [0.66 liters/second] flow rate" (source)

1m3 = 1,000 liters

→ 1,500 riders?

Except - that reactor needs to be cooled 24/7. Multiply that number by 3 (shifts per day), by 7/5 (weekends), 52/49 vacation, sick days, 4/3 (breaks. lunch. chatting ... so:

1500 x 3 x 7/5 x 52/49 x 4/3 = 8914 riders. More if unions get involved. The Red army - fewer needed.

None. If the reactor is shut down and there is no power to the electric pumps, fire up the reactor to power them up.

Was this a trick question?

Not in Fukushima or Zaporizhzhia.

For reference, a shower is about 0.2liters per second, ie. 5,000x more.

No. The salt would corrode the heat exchangers and pipes.

Absence of anti-doping measures in the reactor cooling field may reduce this number somewhat.
