Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Same.

The parks that will not be reopening on Friday are:
  • Cummins Falls State Park
  • Seven Islands State Birding Park (Knoxville, Tenn.)
  • Lamar Alexander Rocky Fork State Park

That hasn’t happened here yet but I’m sure it will. I’m having a really hard time with it trying to manage work, school and the kids. My 7 year old daughter has taken to carrying around a stuffed animal and my 8 year old daughter is frustrated with “home school” and is acting depressed and cries all of the time. She misses her friends and life and doesn’t understand how this is impacting her in a way that she can express in words.

It doesn’t help that their mom does essentially zero schoolwork when they are with her and plops them in front of the TV for 2-3 hours every morning.

I’m just ready for this to be over, but am resigned that we probably won’t “open” in NY for a long time. But hey, I’ve ridden more miles this year than 17,18, and 19 combined so I guess there’s a silver lining.

My guess is it's related to how busy they typically are. My local (Rock Cut State Park) is the largest in northern IL, but with the overall increase in people using parks for recreation I guess they figure that it will get too crowded.

That's rough. My wife is taking care of a 5 year old since his preschool shut down a while ago and his parents are still working.

I'm hearing similar things from her, he hasn't left his house for like 6 weeks and doesn't really get why, when previously he was at school 5 days a week. His teachers told him that they can't go to school anymore because there's a "Big Germ" out there, but what else can you tell a 5 year old?

Poor kid even was supposed to have a big group video call with teachers and all of his classmates. He got super excited and dressed up to look good for his friends but he was the only one that signed in to the call I think that eventually that day he did get to see some of his friends on a video call, but it still bummed him out.

It sucks all around. I’ve been having the girls
FaceTime with their friends when they’re here with me. Fortunately, my wife was already voluntarily not working and that’s been incredibly helpful.

Their teachers finally started doing doing video conferencing via Google Meet, our district has been a little bit behind with regard to technology, but is catching up.

I usually bomb around the neighborhood for a mile or two with them on their bikes every day and go for 2 mile runs with my oldest (she runs a 9:20 - not bad for an 8 year old) while the other rides her bike. At least they’re getting out of the house a bit.

He looks so much more comfortable on it now.
You gonna put up any sweet jumps for him?

I've actually not been to the birding park. Although it says Knoxville it's way on the other side, 45 minute drive. It looks like mostly gravel trails with a smallish parking lot, so I don't follow why that would be closed when almost all of the other state parks are opening.

The boy just logged in to their first Google Meetup for his class. His teacher immediately teared up as the kids' faces popped on-screen.

I just had a telemedicine visit with a 70 year old guy who does NOT have covid19 but he kept quizzing me on the role of hydroxychloroquine vs. convalascent plasma vs invasive ventilators in the management of COVID19.

I tried to explain to him that there is much that we don't know and that his best strategy is avoidance so we don't have to face these issues. He would not drop the subject. Oh boy. He clearly has too much time on his hands and is probably watching too much of a particular network that is popular with his demographic. Sad!

Did you have to tell him that injecting sunlight and/or disinfectants into the body wasn't a good idea?

Not if I punch him first. I was a big fan at the beginning but (and not to get too political here) I think he was potentially screwing upstate to look good to his voting base.

Regardless, I don’t see NY “opening” until September at the earliest.
