2001 Lemond BB lock ring

Hi,

Looking to locate/ buy a lock ring that is missing .

Should /Could I put something in its place until I can locate one ?

I measured with calipers 36.2 mm

Appreciate any and all help

Looks like a standard Shimano cartridge type BB, where is the lockring meant to thread on to?

I'm seeing a standard sealed cartridge BB that doesn't use any lock ring.

I think it's just a cover because pedal spindle is solid.

Bike rides fine

Really appreciate the responses.

Where could I get a cover?

Are all shimano BB covers the same size ?

Maybe it's just a silver colored ring.

As you can see, it looks like at least a ring should go on by the space that's there where it's beveled

If not, why would they make a space for it????

So there is a "ring" that goes there. Wondering if any Lemond owners, or someone else might have this part ?

Or will know what will fit and where to get.

I tried google but no luck.

That's a Lemond, but it's not the same BB you have. Watch the video
Your bike is missing nothing but a good cleaning around the bottom bracket

Ah........Ok.........mmmmmm

It does NEED a cleaning. I just picked up the bike yesterday.

I guess I still wonder why would Lemond have a bevel there rather than just going straight across and have a better " finish" ???

Maybe it's how they made that model and year **********?

Never seen that on any other bike.

Again....thank you all for the great help.

Would be nice to find someone who owns a 2001 to see if it's the same .


In the meantime, I will clean it up

The yellow bike is likely a Shimano BB-6500 which just has provision for an external as well as internal tool to remove the NDS cup but is not a lock ring.

Your bike may have had that BB originally but it probably was replaced at some time.

Lemond has nothing to do with the finish. They spec/buy components from others

As mentioned, yours is just a different style of threaded BB and yours is a better setup for ease of removal and less chance of feckering up your knuckles, lockring and bike paint when the wrench for the outer notched type slips off during gorilla torque situations. Doesn't look as shiny as the yellow bike but yours and the cranks are a cheaper setup and shiny costs $$$.

I see nothing amiss with the OP's setup. It is as it should be. Lemond had nothing to do with this setup. It appears to be a bog standard Shimano square taper sealed bearing bottom bracket. Clean it up if you wish but there is nothing missing. When it wears out, replace it with a suitable new cartridge bottom bracket

A bit more background, in case the OP is used to older non cartridge BBs. On a non cartridge BB like the old square taper plus cup setups, or a BB-7700 for example, the drive side is tightened in and the non-drive side (NDS) is moved to adjust clearance. Once that adjustment is thrown on, a lock ring is added to hold the NDS cup in the correct position.

On a (now much more common) cartridge BB all of that bearing clearance is built into the cartridge BB. The plastic or metal piece with the internal spline on the NDS tightens against the cartridge body rather than through the rolling elements, so it effectively replaces the lock ring.

If you are worried that your bike does not have a cartridge BB and is in fact missing the lock ring it’s easy enough to tell. I’m assuming nobody did anything abusive with a thread locker and or over tightened the NDS cup to the point of seizing the crank. If you should have a lock ring and don’t then the NDS cup would spin out by hand with no tools, until it hits the crank arm. If it doesn’t do that then it’s the sort that doesn’t need one.

I suppose for vanity purposes you could pick up a standard BB lock ring from another BB and thread it on to the exposed threads, but there’s zero functional reason to do this. Plus, if it’s a plastic NDS cup then the non-functional ring may well rattle loose and make a mess of the paint as it tries to escape down the crank arm. I wouldn’t advise it.
