How old is this Clement tubular?
I’ve started on my winter project and was curious about the age of this Clement tubular tire. The logo is so much more sophisticated and discreet than the logos of today…..

Agreed: unsafe. The cotton has been quietly rotting away, especially at the stitches. Sidewalls are at the crumbly, brittle stage of decay, also.
I remember vaguely that the "future" allusion in the Futurox name referred to some sort of innovative component---maybe a layer of some kind of puncture-resistant material, like the Wolber Invulnerable, which had a layer of steel mesh.

The front won’t hold air so I’ll put on new ones, front and rear. And yes, the tape and glue have mostly turned into a fine powder.
I’m having a hard time finding something that looks early 70’s appropriate though.

Those were at one time a pretty popular, budget tire. I haven't seen a Clement Futura since about 1985.

FMB does traditional handmade tubulars in silk and cotton, with a good tan-wall --if you can afford them.
Veloflex produces some nice handmade ones, as well. Takes a little hunting around for tan walls at a good price.
You could try here. I bought from Merlin, World Class, and Probikekit over the past ten years, too.

Thanks for the help and ideas. The rims are very true, show little wear, and should clean up well. I’ve not ridden tubulars since I was just out of college, so looking forward to it. And I will try that newfangled tape instead of glue, too.

Not sure if Clement was still producing the Futur CX but were plentiful new stock late as 2014-15. A lower end budget, less tpi, road trainer though has better quality Thailand sourced rubber. Believe they were made there as well.
Use your best judgement on condition and labor time to maintain. If they hold air, that's a no guarantee start. Coat the sidewalls (tent seam sealer), new base tape (+barge rubber cement), squirt of Stan's. Burn them up or pop for Panaracer Practice 270.
