A tale of Two Bridges
scene: St. Louis, MO (and the adjoining county).
Bridge #1: Eads Bridge.

The bridge wasn't passable for much of the time that I lived in St. Louis, and I realized that I'd never ridden across it. A look at google maps showed that it had a path/sidewalk on the south side, so I thought I should give it a shot.
Starting on the east side from a scenic overlook, it was rather easy. Very little glass and debris, with some wide spots at the piers to permit stopping and taking pics...
This shot gives a glimpse of the steel structure of the spans....
and of course, I needed a shot with the Arch in the background...
Up close, it's hard to really get a shot of the bike with the Arch, but it does hint at how much stainless steel is used in the structure/sculpture...
A better perspective is obtained from river level, a few hundred yards away...
A closer look at a bridge pier and the steel structure. Not bad for being nearly 150 years old.
and a shot of the bike at the base of the bridge on the Missouri side... (looking across the Mississippi, towards Illinois, for those not familiar with the geography)
Later that day, I took the bike over to Babler Park, west of the urban area, for a romp through the hills that are at the edge of the Ozarks. Lots of fun, lots of hills, and heavily wooded. It's hard to find a view that shows what the hills are like, so this is a pic on Fox Creek road, near Eureka, and adjacent to I-44.
Fox Creek road is named after Fox Creek, which runs adjacent to the road for much of its length. I did grab a photo of the bike on a small bridge that crossed Fox Creek (this is at the junction of Old Manchester road and Bassett road).
Bridge #2:
After I took the photo, the pickup went by me, turned north onto Bassett road and stopped. The driver asked "everything okay?".
I told him everything was fine, but thanks anyway.
I'm mentioning this just because it's important to let folks know that there are a lot of nice folks out there!

Today seemed like a nice day to scout some roads for the Tanner's Orchard Vintage ride in September. The roads are all small ones, and periodically a county will decide that a paved road can be downgraded to gravel, so I've got to verify that my preferred route is still passable!
I had to head north of Chillicothe, so it seemed like a chance to go a bit further to Sparland and see how that bridge across the Illinois river was progressing. Better bring a camera along!
Well, I did stop at a little bridge that crossed a small creek north of Chillicothe. Seemed like a decent and quick "bikes on bridges" photo...
I'm not sure what caught my attention, but it looked like there was something unusual in the shaded area of the creek. Allowing my eyes to adapt to the lower light level, I noticed a deer... and a fawn! I had plenty of time to get a few shots, as the fawn was very engaged in feeding.
The Route 17 bridge at Sparland is an old truss bridge and a bit scenic. It offers a nice view of the river, but the lanes are very narrow! I've ridden a bike across it in the past, but there's always too much traffic to just stop for a photo. Well, the bridge is undergoing some work right now, so I stopped at the west end to get a few photos. Not as nice of a view as mid-span, but I don't need to get in trouble for wandering around the construction area.

'86 Raleigh Kodiak. For for the first ride after our traumatic bike crash, we decided to visit this cool old bridge. It's over 100 years old, which is more than all 3 bikes combined!

I keep forgetting that the expectations for rivers and bridges in southern California are a bit different than here in the midwest.
I've spent a little time in the military in Orange County and San Diego, and a few years in Yuma, AZ. ... plus a little time around Long Beach dealing in aerospace electronics. That was a long time ago, though! (back when aerospace was still a big thing in southern California and Top Gun was still at Miramar)

A little back ground. That ugly foot bridge? Is over 120 years old, and the bridge in the background is older yet. The canal is a river that was either the first or one of the first the M.I.D. built. What about M.I.D. is special? We hold rights over the state's watershed that predates san francisco's.

Having lived in Yuma in the late 70's, when there was still plenty of water flowing past in the Colorado, the current situation of the watershed gets my attention. I hope the situation gets resolved soon, but I can't imagine that it will be easy.

I took the 1980 Holdsworth Special out for a spin in Saint Paul MN today and passed by this old streetcar station and footbridge.
At the foot of the bridge I found this: 10% RAD? Oh come on now, the bridge is totally rad!!

I'm on the Miyata Triple-Cross. I really like this bike but wish I could get a slightly wider (currently 38s) tire on it.
