Rusty Spoke News

The Rusty Spoke is a volunteer-run bike co-op near downtown Phoenix (1110 Grand Avenue). We rehabilitate and sell bikes, we have a work-trade program for people who don't have spare cash to get bikes, and we help people fix their bikes. This thread is to post news about the Rusty Spoke or to answer questions.

The Rusty Spoke is currently open Wednesday evenings from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm and Sunday mornings from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. Stop by if you're in the neighborhood! We'd like to be open more hours but we need more regular volunteers.

This week's news is that we'll be selling bikes at the Downtown Phoenix Farmers' Market this Saturday (Dec. 10) from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. The Market moved last spring - it's now located at 5th Street and McKinley.

We have a ton of inventory right now so we expect to have more bikes at the Market than ever before, and we'll be offering one-day-only discounts.

Lotsa bikes ready for sale this Saturday.

The White Trek hanging from the ceiling is 1988 or 1989, with a sweet 600 groupset including cranks and hubs.

I rebuilt the red Trek immediately to the left of the white Trek. It has a nice RSX 1x7 drivetrain, and I'm satisfied with myself that I got the red foam grip to slide nicely onto the twist shifter for a bit of color-coordinated pizzazz. I hope albrt is successful in selling it to someone who will appreciate it (or just buy it anyway).

The red Dynacraft in the foreground is an aluminum frame with a clunker-style fork and wacky 3-speed derailleur gearing. Your friends will not have a hard time picking you out of a crowd on this bike.

couple of pics from the market today.

Beautiful day but business was slow. We brought 30 bikes, sold two and raffled two. Seems to be getting harder to sell bikes these days.

Here are a few mountain bikes we received recently at the Rusty Spoke.

The Rusty Spoke sells bikes locally in central Phoenix, which is why we are posting in the local subforum rather than one of the BF online sales forums. These haven't been fixed up for sale yet, but you could get a deal if you want to come visit us and check them out. Sorry, but we do not have staffing for online sales, packing, and shipping at this time.

There are typically at least three BFers on duty on a typical Wednesday evening. The line for autographs forms to the right...

And buy our great bikes!

Sad news for Phoenix area collectors - the 1988 Huffy Elite road bike with the official Greg LeMond signature decal has been sold. Hurry in on Sunday morning before all the really good bikes are gone.

Here is a sad story - this classic Manitou has a classic head tube fracture.

If you have ideas for fixing it or if you just want some awesome parts, make us an offer! We'll be open Wednesday 5-8 pm.

Happy Holidays everyone. Normally the Rusty Spoke is open on Wednesdays and Sundays, but this Sunday is Christmas and sadly we do not have staffing to be open that day.

Hope to see you on Wednesday the 28th.

Nice day at the downtown market Saturday, but not a ton of sales. Sold two bikes and gave away one, all cruisers. Funny how when the sun came out around 11:00 am the casual bikers started showing more interest in buying bikes.

Big News - new sales hours

For the first time in many years the Rusty Spoke is adding weekly hours. We'll be open 5:00 pm to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday evenings for bike sales only (not for repairs or work-trade).

We're offering these additional hours on a temporary basis to see whether we can sell more bikes.

Still open regular hours (5:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Wednesday and 9:00 am to noon on Sunday) for all purposes, including repairs and work-trade.

Stop by the Rusty Spoke on Sunday morning - we have a ton of bikes ready to ride, or some nice project bikes if that's your thing. On Tuesday I cleaned up a red Cannondale monoshock from the 2000-ish time-frame (pictured above). It would make a nice Townie cruiser with the shock locked, and could still do decent trail service.

Tuesday Bike Sale Night

Rusty Spoke will be open tonight for bike sales only. Weather looks good. I'm looking forward to cleaning up the mid-1980s Centurion Iron Man we got as a donation on Sunday.

Stop by if you're looking for a bike.

Sold two bikes and some other stuff, so that's worth being open a couple hours. Didn't have a chance to work on the Centurion - here it is. Sorry for the non-drive side photo, I was in a hurry.

The Centurion Ironman was sold less than 24 hours after basic repair and maintenance was completed. That is pretty typical.

If you are a bike maven in the Phoenix metro and you are not dropping by the Rusty Spoke regularly, you are missing out.
