1990 Trek 970
What are these taller lugged frame Trek 950’s worth. I’ve seen a few of them but mostly in the 18” frame size.

The crankset is not original and looks horrible.
I'd say $250 in the Southern California market assuming the bike is rideable. The crankset may hurt the value, but you may find someone that doesn't care.

Agreed that the crank does not look good on this bike. It likely won't matter to someone who wants a rider but it will matter to anyone looking for an older Trek to fix up and ride. $150-$250 in my corner of the midwest.

I would agree on the $250 or so in value really nice bike. But there are just a lot of really nice late 80's and early 90's MTB hard frames out there for sale at fairly cheap prices great for buyers not so great for sellers. As said the crank set and pedals do seem to hurt the bikes cosmetics and the cheaper ladies seat on this nice big frame bike just looks out of place.

That clear plastic guard may be easily disconnected, you might want to check that before changing the whole affair out. I think it looks fine underneath probably.

yes it has screws on the back.
this originally came with a Shimano Mountain LX HP Biopace. Are these cranks any good or should I look for the Shimano Deor LX that came on the ‘90 & ‘91 models?

I’m not sure how to tell if they also changed out the BB.
It’s a Shimano square taper for the triple crank that’s on there. Would this BB work if I can find the correct mountain LX triple crank?

The BB has to be the right length for both cranksets if you want to keep it. A mountain LX is probably 122.5mm or 127mm length. No idea what the current crankset is using.
Any Deore or higher level crankset from the early 89-93 would look good. Doesn't have to be the mountain LX.

Check your local market trends, these are $100-150 in my area - region is everything for local values (ones priced higher seem sit for sale)

I was able to find the correct 1989 Shimano Mountain LX crank on eBay with the 26-36-46 tooth rings.

Great ,note the older hard allow or steel Biopace rings grip hard and can be chain eaters so you should upgrade put a new chain on the bike. I have steel Biopace small bail outs on a couple bike's they work great. Also you can pretty easy replace mix match rings on this crank and gear setup.

In the market
I’m in the market for one of these in the 22” size and don’t care much about what components are on it. I really just want a frameset in decent shape to build up with “modern” components. This one looks great — I bet it rides like a dream!
