Opinion on possible 1970's miyata + dura ace?
Hi,
Due to tour de france and good weather I decided I needed to buy a cheap roadbike to work out some. The ad said it was a Koga Miyata about 15 years old mounted with Shimano Dura Ace parts. I don't know much about racebikes, but I did read that Dura-Ace was supposed to be good quality. However once I brought it home, and started googling what year the parts could come from, I found out that the parts were in the 1973 Dura Ace catalog! Not exactly 15 years old
. I was told that these forums had experts on this matter. Since the bike has no decals or badge anymore, I don't even know if it really is a Koga Miyata. There is a serial number that says F24278 but that is all that I know of the frame. The steering and saddle bar are made by SR from Japan it seems, the rims by Mavic.
I hope you could tell me from what year this bike is from, and if it actually even is a miyata. And, is it a cool vintage find and worth cleaning up, or just a too old racebike?

Assuming it is a Miyata, and I see no reason to think otherwise, serial number says 1977. That also seems consistent with the parts, so I think the answer is 1977 Miyata.
What are you using it for? IMO it is an interesting bike, but I think most folks prefer the later Team Miyatas. It's likely a very nice bike of good quality and definitely worth cleaning and riding.

As told on the other forum (jazzper); nice find! If correctly identified probably worth an overhaul. I have a plastic 70/80s headset badge and you can have it.
I owned a green 1977 Koga Miyata Gents Racer with Shimano 600 group. Both your bike as mine can be found here:

The 1978 brochure also has a picture of the Pro Racer PR model, and it looks very much alike, except that the front chain sprocket is black there: https://www.koga.com/koga/linkservid/...93/showMeta/0/

Those flutes on the stem seem like they are just begging to be painted. I really like the look of painted flutes and cut outs on the components. Ray Dobbins and Drillium Dude have done some really gorgeous work in that department. You can see some here:
