Why not just use your bibs or cycling shorts and buy a pair of slip on Lycra knee warmers. It looks just like knickers but the beauty is that if you or the temps warm up, you can take them off and slip them in your back pocket.

I do plenty of cool and cold weather riding; while knee warmers are a solution, it's nice to have fewer obstacles between you and getting out of the door, 'specially if you don't anticipate a big enough change in temp to warrant taking off the knee warmers mid-ride.

From the original post

"Preferably, I'd also prefer no chamois as I'm happy to wear cycling shorts under the tights".

I was skeptical of 3/4 knickers and for years avoided them. Then three years ago I was speaking with a friend who swore by them. Said knickers were much more comfortable than puling on knee warmers. So I figured what the heck and I bought a pair. I am now three pairs in and think they are the best thing since pre-sliced bagels. Bib 3/4 knickers are awesome for fall weather riding. At least in my neck of the woods.
