Slightly off topic, but I saw Dave Scott’s 1980 Ironman ride this morning on display in Boulder.

Note the brake cable routing.
Also note that the display shows NDS.

And that’s Connie Carpenter’s 1984 Olympic bike behind Dave Scott’s.

Today was the first ride on this bike and it was cut short as the drivetrain made a little noise. I will reserve judgement on ride quality 'til I fix the issue and get some miles in. Today the weather was great in Portland. I took five bikes out today for cleaning and quick ride.

When Dave Scott was inducted into the triathlon hall of fame (first inductee). He took that bike with him on stage. He said it was the only bike he held on to all these years. It was missing a wheel and he said he didn't know what happened to it. He guessed it might have been lost in moves or auctioned off.

That explains the mismatched wheels. Cool artifact.

Well, he didn't race it the way it's displayed. It had matching wheels and corect cable routing. Here's a pic of the bike winning the 1980 Ironman. His bike time for the 112 miles was 5 hrs 3 min. About 22 mph average. He also had to run a marathon right after. He'd broke 5 hrs if he'd been on a Ironman.

Well its was gonna post a pic today but the weather isn't cooperating. But here's a pic of a 5 gallon glass water jug that I'm trying to fill with spare change. The goal is to get enough to buy an '85 frame and a modern group...oh it's gonna happen.

Heck, you shoulda said something Friday. I have a pile o' pennies to donate to the cause. Probably enough pennies to build a frame from scratch, although a copper and zinc bike would probably weigh about 90 lbs. And Centurion Copperzincman doesn't quite roll off the tongue.

Those things hold a ton of change. Ok, about 135 lbs, but you get it. $600-$700 in average coin.

Wow my size and in nice condition. now if i had the $$ just after i bought a new gravel bike...

He used the tables from vintagecenturion.com for most of the specs except what was changed. it would also be interesting to get the SN off of it, and see when the serialized happened.

I ran into a "barn/garage" find today. A customer wanted to put his order into this old garage/shed that is behind his house. As we are stacking the stuff in there I notice an old dusty "bike" in the corner. It's a Honda CT70! The customer used to ride it when he was a kid. I have absolutely no need for something like that, but I might be able to get it for next to nothing. Then maybe flip it and make some coin. I'll see if he wants to get rid of it next time I see him.

Years ago when my brother in law bought a Harley he bought one of those for his boys. All three had to share one. But I think the adults enjoyed it way more. That thing was a hoot.

My older brother's first wife's parents lived on Lake Possum Kingdom. They had one there to goof around on. When they married, it came to our house. I kept it running, while others kept breaking it. It was a hoot. Fast enough to get in trouble, but small enough to just stand up and let go to get out of that trouble.

Speaking of '89 masters. Does anyone know if the original cassette is a UG (uniglide)? I know the '88s were. Not sure about the '89s.

This IM precursor is Eroica Compliant without any work so I rode it Sunday in Cambria. AND at the swap meet, I found a super deal on a pair of Araya Aero 4 laced to Superbe pro hubs with a Winner Pro FW that looks like it won't skip. This wheelset will be used next year instead of the Campy Mavic wheels I used this year.
