Estate Sale Bid Box Massacre
Well, it wasn’t supposed to go down that way…
I had looked at a couple of overpriced machines yesterday at an estate sale, and figured, “What the heck, I’ll put a couple of bids in the box.” I thought it would be fun to work on the International, and the Bruce Gordon is pretty cool, too.
I offered 175 for the International and 250 for the Hikari (I dunno), as another guy stood next to me bidding on them as well. I got a call this afternoon that I had won them both! I’m not even sure why I did it, as I’ve been in a downsizing mood lately, and I probably should have let them go to the next highest bidder, but what the hell, here they are!
Both 56’s which is fine for me. Bruce Gordon has most of the original XT seven speed. Raleigh is well loved, so most of the Campy is gone, but still has the original Brooks, I think.
Bummer about the unicrown! I had seen images of these with a lugged fork that looked really cool. Tange 2, made in Japan, weighs a ton with those chromoly racks.
Whippany Cycle in New Jersey, of course! The Hikari is from Bike Gallery here in Portland.

Can’t argue with that investment.

Total $425 for both worth the price of International frameset, headset, saddle, and hubs alone. You can affordably return it to it's original glory.

Sometimes I feel tacky for including prices paid for bikes, but then I remember that anyone posting a new carbon gravel bike or mountain bike has parted with many thousands of dollars, and then I don’t feel so tacky.
Thanks for the reassurance!

Great score on the Bruce Gordon, that's going to be a great ride.
What were the price cards for, suggested bid starting amounts?

Did you have one shot to bid? Put a bid in a blind box and see how it goes? Great score.

I think that worked out very well, congrats!
Does anybody know who in Japan built the Hikari frames for BG?
Based on nothing at all (except Bay Area proximity) I wonder if there's any connection with the "boutique" JP frames that were sold by Jitensha Studios in Berkeley...

Whippany Cycles still exists in NJ - I've driven by them on work trips, but never had the opportunity to stop in.

Don’t forget the seatpost and bottom bracket!

Minor detail, but that XT rear derailleur and the bar ends look like 9 speed era to me. Is it shifting a 7 speed cassette?
edit: Just zoomed in. Looks like a Deore M510 9 speed RD

Maybe I am tacky, but I get a little thrill from hearing about people's big scores. thanks for sharing!

I was just puzzling over the drivetrain last night. The Deore RD is definitely 9 speed, and definitely a replacement. I would assume it came with a 737 8-speed era derailleur. But the rear cluster is a 7-speed, with the spoke protector still in place, and the bar end shifters are SL-BS50's which are seven speed as well. Who knows, maybe this guy didn't want to make the jump to index shifting, and had a more friendly friction setup installed? Maybe Feldman remembers that assembly detail, or maybe it was a production glitch?
It is interesting to own what you might assume is one cyclist's lifetime of bicycles, which are both set up the same. You can imagine he bought the Raleigh in '74, rode it pretty regularly for 26 years, moved across the country, and splurged on something more current, but not that different. Then he somehow destroyed an XT rear derailleur, and rode the back brake until it almost wore through the rim, while the front pads are original. I love sifting through the clues.
