95 Kona Explosif Bottle Cage Mount Repair

Hi All!
Just picked up this Explosif and it has had a cage mount ripped out. Can/should this be repaired?

Thanks for any assistance!

Is that steel? The other mount looks not much better.

Yes, steel, as DorkDisk mentioned. The upper mount is tight...

There appear to be cracks extending from it, one going downward and one going upward. Would be worthwhile confirming that those are only paint cracks.

When did any bike makers decide it would be a good idea to use a rivet-style boss in thin, butted cr-mo tubing?

Someone added such bosses to my Pro-Tour's downtube, adding a second cage and even an extra boss to lower the stock cage mounting a couple of inches.
It hasn't failed, yet.

My Bianchi Nuovo racing is also the victim of someone with a drill, has holes drilled in the butted seat tube and the actual bosses glued on with J-B Weld (one of which broke loose).

Lucky I guess that I'm light enough to ride these without breaking anything for a while. Of course I got the Bianchi cheap and did rescue the Pro-Tour from the trash.

If the cracks don't go too far, you might be able to save the frame by brazing on some of those star shaped bottle reinforcements. Like these:

If it were my frame, I would whip out the torch and have it sorted in no time. I don't know whether you could pay someone to do this, or if they'd all say the tube needs to be replaced.

Nope, lots of good parts on it though, wheels, all XT parts, Marzcocci XCR shock, which needs a rebuild. I might still ride it after the shock rebuild.

I would not expect our local frame builder to charge you more than $100 max for both bosses and maybe much less but the paint damage would be a serious problem and make it unreasonable. The cracks I see are serious stress risers, if you are a risk taker I would strongly encourage you to stop drill the ends of those cracks and avoid long, fast declines.

Thanks easyupbug, my initial thought was it would be great lightweight bike for my local rail/gravel trails, but for me, between the hole and the dent issue is turning out to require more work than I can put into it. I may just strip it down and see what I could get for the frame, if anything.

Thanks All!
