bar end shifter indexing
On my touring bike I have 8 speed Shimano bar end shifters. The right shifter can be set to either indexing or friction shift mode. A while ago when I was dialing between the two modes, I may have broken/damaged an internal part that allows the indexing function. Now, I can only get the shifter to function in friction mode. Friction mode is okay but I really miss indexing. I disassembled the shifter to the extent that I was able but cannot figure out what went wrong that caused the loss of indexing. Has anyone had a similar issue of know if the shifter can be repaired. Thanks in advance.

I have been told (but cannot find the source) that the change from indexed to friction should only be done when the shifter is in the 'smallest cog' position.
So you might try moving the lever to that position and then attempt to move the SIS selector ring to indexing.
