Zoom!
Okay, I know this is a crazy idea and it will doubtless earn me ridicule and rebuke, if not actual banishment. But I haven't been riding much and I'm thinking about it more and more. So...
thesis: It would be cool to run a Zoom call during a brevet, for the riders to keep in touch with the other riders.
Has anyone tried anything like that?
I realize there would be all kinds of problems, especially in areas where there is no cell coverage, so it definitely wouldn't work everywhere. But... potential?

You'd be surprised how many areas in the regions we rid in don't have adequate cell coverage.
One of the screens I never want to see on my Garmin shows all the riders near me. That might be as much togetherness on a brevet as I can take.

Seems like a lot of hurdles to get over, including
i) battery life
ii) mounting the phone where its front-facing camera can see you
iii) dealing with weather and rough roads
I know some people use messaging (e.g. WhatsApp) to keep in touch during a brevet, but me personally I keep my phone in my jersey pocket and don't even bother to pull it out and look at it (at least until stopped at a controle).

This has potential. First one to the control cafe starts a zoom with the menu. When I rock up the food and coffee is there waiting for me. Unfortunately it's cold because it's been sitting there an hour.

Ordering takeout is a time honored tradition on brevets that doesn't require a group call to mess it up

I often did not have cell service on Verizon in the Poconos this weekend or sometimes just 1X making even Spot Tracking impossible.
A Zoom call when riding? Sounds dangerous to me. How would this work? I don't see how. Is it like a phone call? Would you stop or keep riding?

Sounds terrible.
Being alone is the whole reason I enjoy long audax rides through the country side
If you want to talk to someone, ride with them
