My first example was from yesterday's ride. A (70s?) Schwinn Panther locked up outside a high school.





Second example: Raleigh Sprite, which dad used to tow his son on a smaller bike (kind of like a trail-a-bike, but different).

I saw a 1950s-60s black Locomotief 28" wheel Dutch roadster with full chaincase locked to a bike rack on Pacific Avenue in Santa Cruz CA yesterday. It was the real deal- a bit of rust, replaced saddle, mount for an over-the bars child seat, one grip missing, and coaster-brake only. One Cheng Shin and one Schwalbe tire. Cottered cranks, of course.
It looked like it had many thousands of miles on it. Apparently Gazelle bought up Locomotief in the late 60s, so it's a veteran.
Unfortunately, my camera was miles away, or I'd have snapped a shot for posterity.

For sure... I really need to take my camera with me more often but do have a bunch of random vintage shots I have taken while out and about. With the new cel phone I can now take crappy snapshots of bikes I see as well...

All the time round here, theres a certain type of "lived-here-all-my-life" local that wont throw anything away if it has some life in it-theres a couple of old green raleighs I see about a bit in the centre, and another thats been locked up outside the main station,Piccadilly, for months now, that I'm fighting an urge to-ahem-give a better home to. Prize one was a while ago, ended up chatting to an old chap who started complaining, among other things that people threw bikes away too quickly-hard to fault him really, as the one he was locking up (another thing he didnt like) looked like it was the one he bought at his first day at the cotton mill, 40 years ago-little blue folder, looked like hell,but obviously still going strong,and I wish I had had the sense to get a picture.oh well.
Will see if I can get pics, but am having cellphone problems.

I'm visiting my in-laws in Lawrence, KS for Thanksgiving. While out for a stroll, spotted an old Raleigh locked up outside Carruth and O'Leary on the KU Campus. I'll try to get a picture.

Time to confess. I've been meaning to tell my story.

A few weeks ago, I saw a young man riding a men's Raleigh Sports from the 1970's here in town. He locks it at the train station. I was driving. I followed him home. I basically stalked him. After a while, I could tell that he knew I was following him. I pulled over a few times, which probably gave me away. When he reached his home, he looked pretty freaked. I feel bad about it.

I still see it at the train station. It's in great shape. It's a 3-speed coaster brake model, in green. I think of leaving a note, offering to buy it. For all I know, he's not emotionally attached to it and wouldn't mind selling it. I could even offer to give him a more modern bike in exchange. And I would include an apology about stalking him.

Today while walking in to Performance Bike a mid 80's Schwinn Circuit was locked up outside. While checking out I see the guy unchaining it ,but it took to long for the girl to check me out (stupid 20% off coupon refused to go through). I wanted to go out and say hello because this bike store was in the middle of an area where it was all highways. He looked like the type of guy that bought it new and rides it everywhere.

Doohickie, I see that Schwinn every single day locked up at AHHS. It moves, so I know it isn't abandoned and gets put to good use. The guy on the yellow sprite is a friend of mine.

They're all over here in Chicago. People really dig them in this city, for style. Sometimes I wonder what people think when they see a vintage bike I thoroughly rebuilt locked up somewhere, all shiny with new wheels, headsets, pedals, etc., etc. I saw one of my builds the other day, a raleigh supercourse powdercoated with white cloth tape clear shellaced and a vintage b17. It looked beautiful, but it was a bit dirty, and I had to track the guy down and tell him he needs fenders!

Then i was in a great bike shop, a vintage friendly place that carries pashley and some velo orange stuff, Giles Berthoud, etc. along with plenty of new Bianchi. They had a completely original vintage army bike on the rack, complete with a leather gun holster strapped to the seat tube, under the seat stays. It had a rod brake in front, with a pad that comes down on the tire, original racks etc.

I asked what it was in for. They said a new inner tube. Everything was in perfect working order, and while I was there a mechanic took it out for a test ride. I felt like I was in another time watching it roll out the front door looking ready for a thousand miles, in a shop that had vintage looking stuff hanging all around.

I saw countless classic racing bike being used in this manner in Italy, notice it is unlocked and the owner is nowhere in site.

AND these are some amazing bikes. I talk to a lot of people in England and Italy and I guess the stuff is laying about everywhere. They seem to want GT's from Aneheim CA.. We live in a crazy world.
