The trick will be coming to terms with not having enough time to build a dozen fully ascessorized touring bikes much less ride them anywhere. Now six is a reasonable number.... But then theres the Mountain Tourers, Moutain Bikes, Country Bikes, and the Sport Tourers. And the kid is getting big.....

In our household, the bike stuff is usually well under control for about 8 months of the year (at Dear Wife's orders). But from September through December, when fixing up dozens of donated bikes for the local church and foster care organization, somehow one's back porch ends up covered with dozens of bikes in various stages of rehab. A small sample:
With standing orders from aforementioned Dear Wife that all those bikes find new homes by December 21st. And since she can kill me in my sleep and get away with it, the response is "Yes, ma'am."

I prefer to use the term accumulate instead of hoard

I'm a collector of hoards. Most of those hoards include bike parts and frames.
These are organized, serious hoards, not to be taken lightly. They are scrutinized, identified and well labelled, for example...'Hoard #1' and 'Hoard #10', in case a potential buyer wants to buy just such a hoard.
Contact me if you need a hoard...I can help.

Speaking of hoarder estate sales, something to sell about is a company in the bay area that does estate sales.
They have some wonderful finds if you're in the greater SF bay area. https://www.somethingtosellabout.com/

trouble is it can become a pile.
I suggest trays. Spread things out so easy to look for.
piles of trays just has a better look than pile of parts

I prefer collect because I prefer to buy what is rare or uncommon as a frame and then have it assembled. I think that I will be done after that 4thMTB build for 2023. Maybe I think of a third road bike but that is a much more long term project as there are much more important priorities.

When I moved camp south, I was not prepared for the change of environment, and Watched in horror as the woodwork rotted off a couple of canoe's. Small craft are a lot like bikes, in that they have negative value to most people, thus people will start giving them to you. Of course fiberglass handles neglected a lot beter than wood or steel.

Here's the first Google pic that comes up when I type hoard into Google Search:
And here's the first pic that comes up when I type collection:
It's all about order, cleanliness, and neatness I suppose. I'm down to a collection of seven, but if they were dirty, dusty, in various states of disrepair, and strewn around my basement with a ****load of other junk mixed in, I'd likely refer to them as my hoard

While in Florida at our vacation property I bought a vintage Cilo for about $100 (Beautiful Reynolds 531 Frameset). While talking to my neighbor and referencing myself as a "Collector" and admitting that I had about 8 bikes, his comment to me was: Sounds like an "Obsession". I had never thought about it Quite like that...

Just remember when searching for a part that eludes you, and you initially think, "Wow, these must be getting scarce."
No. There are almost certainly still thousands of said part sitting unused in some dude's lair.

I consider myself to fit precisely in the overlapping circles of collector and hoarder. I am definitely a bottom bracket hoarder. I looked through my box of these a few days ago to help answer a question here and it was at the same time embarrassing and comforting to see them all. I don’t reflect on my basement full of bike stuff but just yesterday I gave some old friends a tour during a visit and there was a collective jaw drop which made me wonder if I might be a weirdo.

I suppose I fall in the camp of semi-organized hoarders. But I'm hoarding not necessarily to own every Ashtabula fork I can find, but because early in my C&V building experience, I was quick to re-sell anything that seemed in excess, but before long found myself buying those very same items for some present need. Of course, that can get taken too far--I have lots of pretty crappy and broken parts around mostly because I figure I'd someday need that cable clamp or barrel adjuster (and I often do, just not a dozen of them). As long as I'm not tripping over stuff trying to find something, I'm okay--though a few too many times I simply can't find something I know I have because there are just too many possible places I might have put it!

Disorganized collector with grand intentions of a great organizational system here. I have thought about using slat wall, or building custom cubicles using some high quality baltic birch plywood and somehow having a section for all the major parts of the vintage road bike components that I seem to ahem... hoarded.

I have more bikes than my wife would like, but definitely not as many that I'd be considered a hoarder. Most of them, for better or worse, are hanging from the ceiling of my garage, so they aren't really "in the way", so there's that.
My biggest issue is that I went though a period where I was wrenching on them regularly, tweaking and cleaning and lubing, while now I mostly ignore them. And even riding has become less and less. But I know something will kick start my enthusiasm again, it always seems to. And maybe next year I will complete the few project bikes I have. And then it will be time to decide which ones to sell off. I guess I'm reaching that stage and that age where I need to be realistic, and bikes that I simply don't have time for will have to be purged.
