Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Same here. ***** is that, because of my age, I am not eligible for full Railroad Retirement until Age 67. If I commence sooner it will be reduced except.....If I keep working until 65 I will have earned 30 years of service and can get my full Railroad Retirement without waiting until age 67. The magic number combination under the system is 60/30. Regardless of when you were born, if you are at least 60 with at least 30 years of service you are entitled to full Railroad Retirement. Unfortunately, I started here somewhat late and took two years off, so the best I can do is 65/30.

My situation is sadder but less complicated in that I have no pension or retirement benefits other than my self-funded 401k/IRA/savings. Sometime in the next 1-2 years mrs datlas and I have to sit down and really crunch the numbers, but I am optimistic I can at least drop to half-time by age 60. That way I can work 3 days/week and ride my bike 4 days/week.

Got the estimate on the asbestos abatement. It's going to bring the whole job up to something like 75 boat units, assuming no more surprises. Oh well. It's only money; we've got it; and there's no turning back now.

How long will it take? My guess...2 weeks.

Whew. Owning a home is awesome, until it isn't. It's good you're able to handle it without having to rob a credit union.

Not as nice as our boat, for better or worse.

Barring bad weather, it'll be done by the end of the week, except for the inevitable punch list.

No ****. Much archeology being revealed here, including the fact that what I thought was a single addition is in fact two additions of different ages.

We've been planning for this for a while.

They're making good progress on the back.

Our house was built in 1946, and a master bedroom added on in 1963, but that bedroom was NOT tied into the heater ducts. Instead, it had a gas wall furnace, which scared the hell out of us when we realized that, even after PG&E came out and tuned it, blue flames would STILL flare out the front when it lit off. We stopped using it and just lived with a cold bedroom.

Last year our main furnace failed to light when we finally got around to turning on the heat in November (this was 2020), which began a 4 month odyssey of insulation, rat-proofing, asbestos removal and installation of a new heating system which FINALLY got to the master bedroom. I think the asbestos removal cost us $2K plus the rental of two hotel rooms for a night.

It also happened at a time when Rango the Greyhound had tweaked his neck and shoulder and was having a paradoxical reaction to the opiate they gave him, which made him wander the house all night with crazy eyes, panting, unable to settle down and sleep.

All in the middle of the winter COVID surge of 2020/2021. It was a f***ing nightmare.

Abso-******'-lutely. And if should you get an OSPW and cage, we won't have any choice but to try to hold on for dear life in your wake.

You need cantilevered roof and floors for that kind of design, I believe. Glass won't hold them up.
