Graveyard Marinoni project, aka The Patina Project
I started prepping the basket case Marinoni I reluctantly purchased from Kurt. Being a fan of rat bikes, my thinking is that worst case scenario (Plan A), I end up with a patina build and a fun bike from my favorite era to ride. Plan B, is, I ride it for a season or so, and eventually tear it down and send out for a frame restoration. I purchased the decal set for it just in case.
here it is as purchased:
here it is so far after some cleaning (more to do), spray painting and detail painting with Testors paint and a brush:
when I get it good enough, I'll clear coat it.
Lots of parts are inbound, including a groupset and more from Brenda.

some assembly has begun. I thought I had a bb for it, but it's not the correct size, otherwise it would be further along. I'm anxious to ride this thing.
again, this is just a cobble-together to ride it. Someday, it will be sent out for restoration, and better more appropriate parts will be chosen.

closer...
I'm in need of silver bar tape, a bb (on order), Speedplay Zero pedals, and a 19-1/2" long frame pump (Sapo or Silca).

Whoa, that is an amazing transformation. I'd be really interested in some detail shots of where you either did repairs or repainting. From what I saw in that other thread, there was quite a bit of primer sprayed underneath the bottom tube that look like it got on the decals...how did you clean that up??

Just my opinion, of course, but I wouldn't bother with a full repaint. I think it looks good already.
I have never regretted the one professional paint job I paid for, but it was a splurge.

John_E it may never get painted. I like bikes and cars restored and with patina. Time will tell once I start riding it. I'm currently leaning toward restoring after a year or so of riding.
AdventureManCO I'll post some detail shots, perhaps this weekend. You will be disappointed though. It's a 27-footer. Looks good from 27 feet away. I put minimum effort into this, just to make it rideable.

No way. I'm already loving it. If you've taken something and improved it, none of it is wasted effort and I respect the heck out of it. cudak888 took it and improved it a great deal, first and foremost by seeing something in it that was more than garbage, and now that same line of thinking is moving it forward, really quite beautiful to see. I dig your approach as well - get it ridable, somewhat presentable, and see how it goes. If all goes well, perhaps a total repaint might be in the future. Great job to you both for saving this one. Similar thinking minds in different places came together and its cool to watch from the sidelines.

welp, it became a rider tonight. I'm so stoked. I just threw a blinky on it and ripped around the block about 3/4 of a mile in a t-shirt and jeans (it's dark and 25 degrees F). It feels lively, light (22.4 lbs as shown), handles great, and rides no-handed perfectly. I could not be more pleased with the effort.
I'm so grateful to everyone here on BF for helping me to acquire the frame and parts to make this happen. Thanks all.
Crappy pictures, sorry but it's late, I'm tired:

welp, roads are sufficiently de-salted from recent rains, so I'm about to take it on the first real ride. I painted a cheap-o Zefel frame pump to match the bike:

So after a dozen rides on the Marinoni, I swapped out the NOS 105 derailleur for a longer cage NOS Sachs derailleur, because I could not get it to stop skipping to next cog down from the biggest (28t) when pedaling hard up hills. It bench-shifted as normal, but on the road, the more pressure I put on the pedals, the more it sounded out of tune, and hard climbing made it shift (only while in the 28). I was thinking maybe I was at the limit for cog size.
At first the problem seemed to be solved. The longer cage derailleur accommodated the 28t freewheel (new Shimano 14-28) better, it bench-shifted even better (perfect), and the auto shifting seemed gone for a few rides. Then last night it did it again, on a very steep hill, with lots of pedal pressure.
I'm at a loss. The hanger is straight, the jockey pullies are in-line. The B screw seems correct. The limit screws are set correct. The chain has zero wear (it's also NOS). The freewheel is new. Frustrating. Is the bike flexing and moving the cable? Wouldn't that make it shift into the spokes, and not the next gear down?
otherwise, I really like how this bike rides. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have you measured the chain for stretch?
Have you checked the frame alignment?

While I'm bummed you are running into shift issues, no doubt this bike got into the right hands. Would still love to see some detailed pics of your work!
Wish I could give you suggestions, but more experienced minds will do you better. Plus, you really don't want to trust the advice from a guy who spends his time rebuilding Huffys
