There's no need to flick elbows in a normal paceline, especially in a non-race. The fact that you pull over, should be enough to let the next rider know to pull through. I consider the elbow flick appropriate when you have someone reluctant to pull through, such as a wheel sucker in a break.

I've seen the elbow flick smack the guy alongside, or catch the odd tree branch wandering into the road

It *is* a very amusing thread.
Bottom line: There's a lot of inherent danger in riding six inches off of someone's wheel at 30 MPH. Don't expect to be coddled if you're doing something wrong.

Eh, I'll disagree. (But quietly; no yelling.)
If the rider in front moves to the left with no elbow flick, no "pull-through" hand motion, no verbal announcement, etc. then the dutiful paceline should follow him to the left...because there's a good chance he's moving left to avoid an obstacle.

It's like seeing an old friend after a not so long separation....I think I'll yell at some people this weekend, or at least pull them out of my line by their jersey. life is too short not to enjoy it.

A couple of weeks ago, the group ride was working a decent pace up the MUP when an inline skater appeared on the radar. He was doing the usual pedestrian weaving all over the place so as we approached, one of the riders up front yelled "ON YOUR LEFT". I think the guy crapped his pants before diving to the right to get out of the way; he had no idea $5000 worth of spandex on $50,000 worth of bicycles was barreling down on him.
That made my day.
