For those that have Shellac'ed your bar
Has anyone done green cork? Pics? I'm trying to get a dark green colored handlebar without buying $60 brooks tape.

You can tint shellac with aniline dyes available at woodworking catalog places. Try woodworker's supply. All colors available.

I mixed some green food coloring with clear shellac and coated celeste cork tape. Worked fine and was a pretty good approximation of brooks green. I rode it several hundred miles and never had green palms. However, I'd suggest you wrap the cork with cloth and then shellac it. I've never had much love of shellacked cork looks.

i want either shellac over cork or leather because i find both provide the perfect amount of cushioning and I don't need to wear gloves. Not a fan of gloves.

I really like the way they feel. They seem to be holding up well. I mixed green paint tinting pigment (I got at the hardware store) with the shellac to tint the string. I think you could wipe or paint a green tinted shellac on the cork tape and get an earthy dark green. I use cheap cork wrap.

You could quit being such a softie and just use cloth tape like a man. I don't wear gloves either. This is blue Newbaum's with two coats of amber and two coats of clear.

I've shellacked cork as well and it was comfy, but I agree it does look a little bit like a bloated hot dog that was left in a wet dirty sink before it was pushed down the garbage disposal.
like i said, leather is def my first choice but I'm just feeling cheap, plus I'm not sure I'd put it on a bike I'd ride in the rain
so I don't know...

I'm convinced that with clear and/or amber shellac and one of the 14 colors of Newbaum's tape I can closely approximate just about any color.
