Cruise Limit

Does anyone know if there is a way to get a bike computer to remind me to ease off if I exceed a preset speed, heart rate, or other limit? I'm thinking about a bike-packing excursion, and I'm afraid I'll overdue it and be unable to ride every day. I really don't have any experience keeping a sustainable cruising pace, and when I try, I keep creeping up toward my usual pace.

I use a Garmin Edge 830 (and I also have a Garmin fenix 6), but would be willing to entertain other options.

Edge 830 Owners Manual - Setting Range Alerts (garmin.com)

Heart rate and power alerts can be set. You can display average speed.

I have a basic heart rate monitor, gives me a number and nothing else. If I am climbing a steep hill, I check it often but otherwise not really needed. No alarm, just shows beats per minute on the watch screen. When it gets uncomfortably high, I stop and get off the bike.

Do you really think you need an alarm?

Thanks! This seems like just what I'm looking for. I'll give it a try next time I'm out.

When I try to ride at a significantly easier pace, I end up creeping back up to my usual effort. It's probably an A.D.D. thing.

Do you have a power meter? That's what you really need. Speed can vary wildly with the same amount of effort (watts) you produce. X watts downhill will result in a much higher speed than X watts uphill. If you know what your comfortable level of watts is at your easier pace, you can set the alarm for power rather than speed.

I do not. It's on my wish list. I think heart rate is probably closer to what I'm really after anyway. The goal is to not wear myself out, so that I can travel some miles every day (about 300 miles total in a week).

That is why I got a cheap simple one, but mine lacks an alarm. I just look at it when I wonder if I am pushing too hard.

If you decide to go for a cheap non-alarm one, I got a Sigma ID.GO. I bought one from Europe and later a couple from Amazon, I install one on each bike I use so I wanted several. Now, Amazon says you need a health care license to buy one which shocks me, they did not require that when I bought in the past from them. Here is one from a European seller that I have bought from in the past. Shipping is slow from Europe.

This one uses an older type of chest strap, not an ANT+ type. I have some older chest straps from a company that went defunct several years ago that pre-date ANT+ that it also works with.

Good luck finding one with an alarm that meets your needs.
