ascent of summerland from gaffey/110 freeway area was positively toasty with little breeze. nice to get some flatty, flat junk miles in. junkman's gotta junk. garmin died at mile 98 so hadda supplement with strava app on the iPhone.
we both wanted to do some angeles national forest roadie escapade but this week is a bit toasty and we'd likely have been limited to <40 miler in those environs. maybe next week.

Impressed, especially during a heat wave.

Next time you guys ride Newport Back Bay again, try Kean Coffee:

Locations & Hours - Kéan Coffee (keancoffee.com)

Best coffee in the OC.

Our group planned out a hooky ride yesterday; we basically all took a day off to have a June birthday ride. Went from ARTIC to Downtown SD for tacos and beer before hopping on the Surfliner back to ARTIC.

My Di2 stopped working on the way to Newport Beach so we stopped for a restroom break while I figured it out; shifter wire came unplugged. Got that sorted until a buddy got a flat a bit later in San Clemente. Everyone stayed safe and had a great time.

Yup, that was us. One of the guys picked it out since it's right next to the train station. Tacos and beer with good company are a great ending to a century ride.

amen. seriously thought about stopping there at burgeon since i didn't know it was there and love their beers. only reasons i didn't are that i hadn't worked up a proper sweat yet
and y'all took up all the bike parking! ended up at the eppig tasting room near shelter island about an hour later. welcome to san diego! the train option makes for a fun, one-way affair.
i'll hit that burgeon tasting room next week.

Saturday - Road...Griffith Park to Hansen Dam and back (35 mi). Easy tempo with a friend who is getting back to riding after an injury. I really don't want to do this route again. Glenoaks Blvd in the Sunland area is terrible - tons of broken glass and debris in the bike lane, and lousy pavement.

Sunday - MTB...Sullivan Ridge - Bent Arrow singletrack - Sullivan Canyon singletrack (21 mi). Challenging, but super fun ride. Legs were drained from Saturday's ride, and this really stretched the limits of my current fitness, but it was the kind of push I need right now. Second ride on the new dirt rig, and I like it even more. I'm still dialing in the final tweaks on fit, and will probably be switching out the current 170mm cranks for the 175mm length I've always used for MTBs. For most riding, the 170s are fine, but I definitely missed the leverage of 175s for high-torque moments.

Last Saturday I rode with my local cycling group with my gravel bike and we did the 4 park climbs which included Debs, Ascot, Elysian and Griffith totaling 41 miles and over 4100 ft of climbing. On Monday did about 33 miles with my riding buddies taking it easy concluding with some coffee on the LA River bike path.

Morning coffee meetup:

Managed 84 miles and 10.7K of climb riding in the Whittier Hills Saturday and Monday combined.
Nothing noteworthy other than great weather and a good conversation for 15 minutes on Skyline with another enthusiast and swapping war stories.

Start of the Oak Canyon - Descending Drive climb. Tree canopy most of the climb.

Yesterday I did 32 miles on the LA River and up to the Griffith Observatory. I'm glad they've decided to close off Griffith Park Dr. in Griffith Park. Way too many jerk wads use it as a shortcut to circumvent traffic from the 134 hwy onto the I-5. I've already have to deal with some a**holes speeding through there.

On a side note, I see the same old man riding his bike up the fire road everyday. On the steep sections he walks it, but if he was on Strava he'd probably be the true local legend! I'm more amazed by the cyclists who just ride without the bike culture nonsense.

I have run into an 82 y/o man a few times while he is doing repeats on Turnbull Canyon Rd.
All under his own power. Very cool.

A belated trip report on the July 4 ride up Glendora Mountain Road.

First, big thanks to the folks who humored me through changing my gearing to allow me to try this ride on my vintage Ironman ("Miami Vice" model). I spent most of the day in 39/28.

Got there later than I meant to, but that meant that I came across JimmyNH in the parking lot; thankfully, he has posted pics here, so I knew it was him. Mentioned that I had seen him at the ride two years before. Also realized that I had left sunscreen at home, but decided it would be worth the pain to go without it. It was.

I've done this ride the previous two years - nearly all of my riding is commuting with occasional shorter rides thrown in. This was the longest ride I've done in decades - 45 miles from the parking lot to the village, where I met up with JimmyNH again. We had a nice chat while we rested, and then started down the hill together. He lost me a few times on the descents, but in general it was fun to ride with him.

Anyway, it was a good day, sunburn has started to peel, and I'm back to commuting this week. Back for more next year!
