Clean 1985 Centurion Ironman

Sold

Kinda hard to let this one go, but I seldom ride this bike. I purchased it in the fall of 2018 and have posted on it over the years. When I got it, it was mostly stock except for the stem and brake levers I believe. This bike was my introduction to this forum and my introduction to higher end tubing and quality in my journey. I had set it up with different gearing and such, but in the end it was a bit more on the sporting end that didn't suit my riding style. Size wise it is about 58 cm center to top on seatpost. CTC on seat tube and top tube is about 56.5 cm .

I have just now reinstalled the little used stock drivetrain parts, and added an appropriate Nitto stem. The aero Shimano BL-251 levers are from the co-op and are the only real mechanical departure from stock. They are the SLR type, and work very well and are quite powerful. Tires have less than 200 miles. All bearings done with most replaced. I would like to keep the seat. I will probably put it on craigslist locally for bigger money, but will offer it here for $325 now. I know these first year ones are hard to find especially in good shape, and in this 58cm size.

Being a retired UPS employee with 42 years there, I am averse to shipping a bike, even with good packaging. I can drive an hour or so from Toledo Ohio to meet up with someone if they are interested though. Im not in any hurry on this.

Shimano BL-A251 levers with built in QR buttons.

More pics with some closeups on the few small flaws are on this valuation thread. This was also before I did the driveline changes.

https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...n-ironman.html

Lots of discussions on specs on bike forums so I won't go over it. Wheels are true as I got a truing stand awhile ago and went through these.

Now $300

Stock 52-42 biopace and 13-24 freewheel

So, if no interest in a week or so here, I will advertise locally. Thanks for looking.

Hi there,

You might want to include the size of the seat tube/top tube

That's a good looking Ironman. Might slightly prefer the more subdued paint schemes of the earlier bikes like this one.

Gave a little knowing laugh at the shipping comment. Definitely don't trust anybody with shipping a bike.

Good luck with the sale.

No interest? Do note that I can meet halfway to someone from Cleveland, Columbus, Detroit, and I could perhaps make arrangements with someone from Chicago.

Get a close up of that rear derailleur with that sweet hidden fixing bolt. I'm keeping my red '85 and will never get back to n=3 again.

...

...FWIW. : the few bikes I've shipped via Bike Flights have worked out OK. They now have a new deal, a proprietary shipping box, with axle spacer inserts, that they'll ship to you for a hundred bucks postpaid. You then fill up the box, get it weighed somewhere, and they quote you a contracted price, via some standard shipping carrier.

It doesn't alleviate the issues with not seeing the bike you're buying in person, but it's better than scrounging a box from the LBS, cutting it down, re-taping it to a smaller size so you don't get hosed by UPS on oversized charges. Which I have done in the past.

Those boxes look very interesting, and would take half of the packaging engineering out of the job. Cost is a bit high though as it would be at least $100-110 for the box and then perhaps $75 for shipping. Closing in on $200 for shipping costs. Box looked cool on video.

More than that, depending on where it needs to be shipped to/from
Charge to ship via BF from CA to VA was $165 recently. Box, packaging not included.
So….there’s that.

The last two bikes shipped to me via BikeFlights have arrived damaged. Insured.
While not completely at fault, the handling was rough and the boxes were damaged.

BikeFlights was less than satisfactory to deal with, and of course, shipping to a frame repair and back has to be via BikeFlights. Not a confidence builder. It only took 8 months to resolve. Then the repair shop “found” a bolt after sending the frame back, mailed it back in an envelope, which ripped open via USPS and is nowhere to be found.

Nothing beats proper packing. Protect every part, and immobilize everything in the box.

I just shipped a bike for $76. Shipbikes.com is down during their transition to UPS. Box size is still the main factor in pricing.

Just received a frameset from sloar . Perfectly done.

Problem with any shipper is that a box the size of a bike is odd enough that they get handled more with other large heavy items. It’s just the way it is. The buildings and systems are set up for normal sized packages traveling on belts. And yes, the best insurance is good packaging, but even then because of the dimensions a bike is open to more possibilities of damage from other odd shaped heavy items that aren’t necessarily even in a box. I’ve seen too much to be comfortable with it, but will admit that most make it fine.

Very nice bike, and I like the top tube length. I miss my Bianchi... How much does your bike weigh, please? Thank you.

Thank you, same as my former 61cm Bianchi, using same method. I am considering it, but I think I need index shifting.

Index shifting wasn’t until the second year on these. It sounds like a conversion is possible, but not real easy. Interestingly I have read where Shimano sold a conversion kit, but it would surely be next to impossible to find.

It seems that the Ironman isn’t as desirable as is claimed here. Reduced now to $300. If it isn’t worth that, I will just keep it I think.

Beautiful bike. I like the subdued color on these more than the later ones. If it doesn't move, you might want to try to move it in the spring. Also going with aero brake levers may not be "original," but they do improve braking and provide a nice surface to grab onto as well. For that reason I like using aero levers with some of my vintage builds.

I think it would be long gone if you were willing to pack & ship, IMO. It's too big for me but if it were my size I'd be begging you to pack it up and ship it - even though I already have more than one Ironman. They are very nice rides. GLWS.

If it sells for 300, you will one day be looking for another that nice and it won’t be found for 400. The furthest my 85 will get from me will be my brother’s house to ride on visits. Hang it up—after you put non-aero levers and vinyl tape on the bars😉

I think the price is good, people have just stopped buying in the area. Your Ironman shows up in the search range I use and none of the Centurion results are moving.
