I think I've been to the Falls and Crown Point 3 times although years ago.

Only once was I on a bike. That was the first week of a 50 day cross country bike tour that started on the coast near Astoria,OR and the portion along the Columbia River brings back great memories.

Yes, that view! Most impressive! Intoxicating even!

One memory from early in that tour was when
 we got to Hood River.

We were riding toward the campground after picking up some groceries and a man flagged us down.

He asked us about our trip. He had an interest because years ago he had bike toured across a country.
It was a pretty short tour as that country was Panama.

After talking with us a while he said he had a mobile home in town which he stayed at during the week and then went home on weekends.

He said we could sleep there if we wanted even though he was leaving town. He had an older vehicle there also and gave us the key to it in case we needed it.

We took him up on the offer and
really were blown away by his hospitality and trust.

That's just one of the many accounts of remarkable kindness and hospitality we experienced while bike touring.

There are a lot of good people out there.

Also a great memory in the area a few days before that was The Metal Cowboy, Joe Kurmaskie put us up a couple days at his house. He and his family were especially kind and generous to us.

As the Great @Spaghetti Legs told me at the top of the Eroica California Cypress climb, about an hour.

Oh my, today was beautiful. It is sunny, warm, (~65 deg), with a gentle breeze, just like @djkashuba

And it's a fair wind
Blowin' warm out of the south over my shoulder
Guess I'll set a course and go.

RIP, David Crosby

Local fields

With the war in Ukraine creating grain shortages there's been a lot of wheat planted here this past year. The harvest has now started but pics of that to follow.
. This picture from last week but had to wait to accumulate 10 posts before posting.

I have been riding my more modern Hybrids of late. Today I go out on my 1993 Diamond Back Sorrento for another visit to the Cane Creek Rails to Trails/Five Mile Creek Greenway at Black Creek Park in Fultondale, AL.

One of the remaining concrete mile markers from the former railroad.

My favorite picture spot on the trail.

After the ride I dropped off my 1990 Specialized Sirrus at a LBS for some service work, then rode a few miles around downtown Birmingham.

Ha! I noticed that same truck in August. How does something like that sit there for so long?

I'm guessing the cost to bring it up the hill is more than the truck is worth. Maybe the owner opted for the alternate solution of scratching out the VIN and removing any other evidence that could connect them to the vehicle. It could be a permanent part of the scenery now.

31 mile jaunt on the new and newly built 84 Raleigh Gran Tour. Frame was new in the box with full provenance.
Pretty rare sports tourer, 120 OLD rear, combination of 531 and 531c.
Built with a somewhat eclectic friction shifted 8 speed wide range double Shimano-based group. Rear hub is a narrowed DA7700.
Shifts & brakes flawlessly, such a smoooooth ride. My first Raleigh!

Led my usual Sunday morning group to breakfast at a local eatery. 26.2 mile round trip. Mid 30s on the outbound leg, but T-shirt weather for the final miles. And I was forced to purchase large quantities of highly addictive controlled substances from a neighborhood pusher on the return leg.

My regular Sunday ride partner @Andy_K called in sick, so I decided to pull out one of my summer bikes on a dry, sunny, chilly day.

I'm glad you got out for a ride anyway. That looks a lot better than how I've spent my day, though I think I was probably a lot warmer than you.

That's a smart and handsome build, Doc! Nicely done. Normally, a Brooks would seem to be the de facto choice for a Raleigh saddle, but the Rolls with the brass trim looks great on that frame.

It's cyclocross season, right?

I wasn't planning to get muddy when I started. There's a short dirt path, a little over a mile long, connecting a couple of my regular routes. The forecast called for a chance of afternoon showers. I thought I'd hit the path before the rains came, but either the rains came early in this part of town, or the path still hadn't dried out from the rains over a week ago. In any case, I picked my lines carefully and plowed through.
