Sierra skiing is pretty good right now. Got out Friday, after checking out Squaw (parking full) and Alpine (huge spillover from Squaw) we ended up at Homewood. They still had no power and were running one lift on a generator. Tickets by Magic Marker, cash only.
Just had my boots worked on and thought I had left them in the van. Nope. Ran back to Tahoe City and rented a pair.
With all that had some great powder shots blasting through the trees.

Tomatillos were on sale $0.33/pound again.
You know what that means: Enchiladas Suiza for dinner.
With pickled Mexican cabbage.
Oh yeah and homemade pickled red onions. I love those things.

I've been a bit busy the last few days and even though I haven't posted I have been reading.
I love that this "shooting the bull" thread has turned squarely into the realm of foodie-ism.
"That lemon curd would go good on a spoon" is the line of 2017...it's what I thought when I saw the picture but my brain fell short of such eloquence.
Unrelatedly, for those that are counting: so far in 2017:
days skiing > days on bike/trainer > rest days.
= Win!

So I start my ride this morning at 0539 in order to beat the predicted thunderstorms. It's now almost 13 hours later and it still hasn't rained. Sheesh.

Eye surgery is done and I have a new lens. No issues with the surgery although no idea yet about outcome because my eye is patched over. It was a weird experience, I liked the drugs.
A bit disappointed because I was planning on getting a bunch of stuff done today and the doctor says no. He wants me to rest. Sheesh.
So I'm home on the sofa in my pajamas, drinking coffee. That was the worst part of it so far, not being able to have coffee when I woke up this morning. That was pretty rough.
Follow up with doctor in the morning, hopefully things will look nice & quiet in the eye tomorrow.

...my eye is patched over.
Glad things seem to be going well! And I empathize with skipping coffee in the morning, I'm a grouchy old bear when I do that.

Today was: no coffee, no bikes. No reason to get out of bed then.
Except for that getting a new intraocular lens thing. That was worth getting up for.
I was sitting there in the pre-op area waiting for my turn and there were maybe 8 or 10 people waiting for their eye surgery too. The anesthesiologist was talking to the guy across from me, I couldn't hear exactly what he said but the anesthesiologists reply was, "it was NOT a waste of time. You just need a pacemaker, that's all. I'll do your procedure today but I'm going to tell Dr X that she has to send you to a cardiologist because at some point your heart rhythm is going to get so bad that you will have no options".
It was kind of amazing. This is really complicated, difficult stuff. It's taken decades of work by thousands of people. But now it's routine as can be. Your lens gets caked up and they take it out and give you a new one and it takes 15 min. Your pacemaker in your heart goes awry. No problemo, we'll give you a new one of those too. This amazing incredible sophisticated stuff is just happening every day all day long like its no biggie. Very cool.

But whatever, that's how life goes. If I don't get where I want to be this year, I'll at least try to position myself for better things next year.
Nemesis is five years older than me. Just based on physiology alone, I should catch her at some point. Might take me fifteen years but I think I can do it.

Well day 2 post-cataract sx has been interesting.
My right eye was implanted with a new-ish lens that typically allows for excellent far and intermediate distance and decent near distance, plus gives you brighter colors, esp pinks and blues. If you get both eyes done, you typically don't need glasses, maybe just reading glasses. Which I have now, although I can read pretty well without them. Sounds pretty good, right?
I was warned that after my right eye got the new implant, the difference in vision between the left eye and the right might be so great that my brain wouldn't know what to make of it and my vision would seem off. Most people adapt over weeks to months, some people never do and need the second eye operated.
So today the patch comes off and my brain is having trouble forming the single image, everything slightly double, which is disconcerting & gives me a big headache. The near vision in the operated eye is terrible (worse than pre-op), I can't read unless I cover the right eye. But if I cover my left eye, my new right eye is amazing at far & intermediate distance. If I cover my right eye, man I can see how bad the "small" cataract on the right really is- everything is blurry & yellow. Gross.
The weird part that I don't understand is that with the right lens removed from my glasses, my worst vision is with the glasses on. It almost immediately gives me a splitting headache. This is the solution I'm supposed to use to drive for the immediate future. No way I could drive, I can't even sit still on my sofa and look at a painting on the wall.
Whatever. The type of lens I got typically takes the longest for the brain to adapt to. The only thing that concerns me is how bad the near vision is. I'm pretty sure all the rest of it will get worked out by my brain or by follow-up laser correction to the lens. But terrible near vision will make it hard to see my Garmin and make reading annoying.
Plus lying around with a headache all day is not so fun.

I'm getting my left eye done next month and my right the month after. I think I'm getting the basic lens that medicare pays for. Did you get the basic lens?

HP, I have not had cataract surgery (yet) but I have had multiple (five) glaucoma surgeries, and have experienced your frustration with your new vision. Your eye is healing and everything needs to calm down. You are probably also on a concoction of antibiotic and steroid eye drops and that has an effect as well. Your vision will get better and more consistent, although mine is never totally consistent. It varies daily and throughout the day. Hopefully you won't have to deal with that. I'm glad it has gone well so far.

That sounds scary heathpack, but you have a good attitude. Sounds like a good opportunity to use your headspace tools. when are you allowed to ride the trainer?
