Were there 1" threadless steerer tube stems at one point?
I have a 1999 Lemond with a 22 year old CF fork. May be fine, but not sure I trust it. I bought a Ritchey CF fork with a 1" Al steerer tube. I can put the stem on with an adapter. But were there stems that fit the 1" tube without adapters? Any good ones?
I think I'm better off with a good cf stem and an adapter. Concur or critique?
Thanks.

There were a few. I had a Ringle 1" stem, which weighed more than the 1-1/8" because it used the same blank but with a smaller hole. Now I just run an adaptor.
CF stems are not worth it IMO, most are carbon-wrapped. A good light stem, like a Kalloy Uno is light and strong enough.

Adapters are perfectly fine. I have two bikes with 1" steerers and 1 1/8" stems. about 45k miles between the two. Never had an issue.

CF is kinda stupid for stems. The primary advantage of carbon fiber is that it can have directionally engineered stiffness and strength, but stems should really be extremely stiff and are stressed in pretty much all directions. That's why if you look, CF stems are often heavier than aluminum.
There are absolutely 1" steerer clamp stems, though they're less common new now, I'm sure NOS isn't that hard to find in common lengths. Hell, I know my shop has a few in a drawer. Shims are also totally fine.
