The bike weighs 88 lbs total, including a rack and box carrier I installed recently, plus some
bike tools and the charger I carry with me.



The fibreglass box is quite solid and the batteries are held in snug with no room to move.
I can hop off curbs and ride on gravel roads without problem or any rumbling; the fibreglass
box seems like it's part of the bike now. I'm pretty happy with it and keep checking to see
that no cracks are developing.

Works great, perfectly legal in CA- 36 volt hub motor (must have older pictures on this list- but thes were taken yesterday).

Nice work on the BATT Box..I've wondered about that part--I've been adding a small cushion made from shipping peanuts and Latex Caulking--and plastic sheeting---creating a vibration pad for the Battery Compartment..great idea.

..that's what's holding me up..I even found a major manufacturer
of Lithium-ion..but they never responded because it seems they want Huge Orders for their technology..
SLA is easy and reliable..but weighs a TON..
Nickle Metal Hydride seems OK..but seem to lack the "burst" that SLA delivers/
From my travels over the Power Supply(Battery Pack)..it looks like I should build my own..
..because what's being sold already built--and even half price compared to a Major Mfg./seems risky/

After spending most of my career on the east coast, I'm now living in the northern US Rockies, specifically far NW Montana, west of Glacier National Park. I love to bike, but some of the steep hills around here were causing havoc with my knees. I went with the Currie conversion kit because I needed great torque, but wanted something extremely affordable since my cycling season isn't as long. (I know some people don't let winter weather stop them from biking, but I'm not sure I've got that kind of fortitude.) I love the Currie kit and it's really got great torque--I don't care about speed, my knees need assistance on the steep forest roads here.


Here's a picture of my 21-speed mountain bike with the Currie conversion kit.







This is the area I bike. As you can see, it's mountainous--we don't have many stretches of flat road.

I finally got my bike running. I started with a Giant Stiletto that I bought one day on a whim.

I took it home and decided the seat didn't go back far enough so I welded up a bracket and changed the seat. Then I decided I didn't like the low bars so I put on some ape hangers. Shortly thereafter I decided it would be a good project to electrify.

I mounted a 1000W 36V motor to it and drove the middle axle on the bike. The motor came with a freewheel on the drive shaft so I don't have to turn the motor when I pedal, I put a BMX freewheel on the middle axle so I don't have to pedal when the motor turns. It is powered by 9 x 12V 5c 4.2Ah NiMh battery packs giving me 12.6 Ah at 36V. Once I got it finished mechanically I taped the electrical to it and went for a rip. I hit the throttle from a dead stop and it moved about 5 feet before it threw the electric drive chain. I put it back on and made sure it was all aligned properly and tried again. This time I was successful, I estimate I was going 30kph on electric only but when I pinned it the controller cut out. I rode a total of about 2km before the controller cooked but it was a good 2km. I've contacted the controller manufacturer and they are being very good about testing and possible upgrading my controller for the difference in cost of the bigger one over this one. I still need to build a battery/electrical box, I'm thinking I'll talk to a tin basher buddy and get one built that sits where the batteries are in the photo.

Yes I do use winter tires, at least in front wheel. It is 20 inch front tire, custom made from Schwalbe Jumpin Jack.

Thanks for responding. If you don't mind, I have one more question. Do you have any significant performance issues with putting a snow tire on only the front wheel? I just installed my e-bike conversion kit and don't look forward to removing the back, motorized wheel to add a studded snow tire. I can easily remove the front wheel to mount a snow tire and might just do it to extend my riding season. (I'm finding that I've got the courage to go longer distances and explore the mountain trails in this region on my bike since adding the power assist kit. The mountain hills can be tamed with power assist and if I'm really tired after a long ride, I know I've got power assist to help me home since I normally pedal to conserve the battery.) I'd love to get out on my bike and photograph the mountains once snow's on the ground.

I did my first long distance(about 8-miles round trip)..with my 24-volt 18-amp conversion from the Schwinn S-750 Battery Pack..it went quite well..without a problem..I found my FUSE Holder was causing a situation..the 40-amp Spade type Fuse was loose inside the holder..I made that adjustment prior to the longer ride..normally..with the original batteries..the Scooter would charge in 6-hours..this extended ride was recharged in about 4-1/2 hours useing the Schwinn 1.5 amp Charger..I also use a 6-amp charge for 2-hours as a added BOOSTER/..I added a Folder at my Facebook Account..for Scooter PICS/..been gettin' a suntan--and excerciseing..my weight is holding 200-lbs. with lots of eating..I bought a New WEBER Grill..TEMPS are hitting mid-90's here in Connecticut..have a good one/[end]

^^In front wheel winter tire is must. If you lose front wheel grip, you lose controll of your bike. Backsliding is easier to handle. But if you wanna get rid of sliding and ride faster you need both winter tires specially with motor output form back wheel. I got studded tires in both wheels.

There was water inside the motor and it freezed twice. First time I could push to brake ice, second I could not and the drop collapsed causing wheel breaking the cables. Lucky me I still got the warranty on it. Snow sometimes sticks between tire and fender as you may see in picture.

I like riding in all weather, in winter there is no rush in bikelanes

ebike.com is now a dead site. I don't think the company is currently solvent. Ebay or Craig's List are probably going to be your best shot at finding an owner's guide.

You may also want to take note that the batteries were possibly recalled due to overheating and some catching fire.

The Chain is rusty..maybe a dip in kerosene(wipe with a cloth)+dry..before adding a chain lube..24volt battery..30-minutes run time..try improving that by charging for 3-days..before riding..I have a Schwinn 24volt and I modified it from 15-amp to 18-amp..I still use the 1.5 AMP Schwinn Charger/but have created a Battery Separator for useing a standard 12-volt Battery Charger at 6-amps for 2-hours..(each bank)..
Of course..there should be a Battery LABEL..showing your Amp Hours..
..and 1.5 AMPS is safe all around..
The batteries I replaced were made by Panasonic..12-volt 15-amp times(2)..
..the Battery that one might consider the REAR-Battery actually shows more(USE)than the forward battery/you may be able to get away with just purchasing a single battery..
I use a SMART Charger(Black&Decker)for charging my used STUFF..@ 6-amps..well the Panasonic shows a stable Shelf Life..while its REAR BATT(needs more attention as it loses its Shelf Life(Charge)..I used those foir 2-seasons..1-hour Round Trips every other day..
That's about all I have encountered..Check All Your Connections..clean and re-attach..I've been useing SLIME(tube repair)..well it also seems that the tubes that are shipped with products are NOT Really great..the one you can BUY off the shelf--are much better..but still try the SLIME/.

Hi, I am new.

Here is a picture of one of our earlier prototypes. We did 600-miles (965km) since the last CA reset.

We saved it from disassembly and has now become one of our daily commuters for about a year. Not too impressed with the torque of this motor and it's quite heavy, but it's rock-solid reliable and good balance of assistance.

Pack is mounted on the seat tube, controller fits exactly in the gap between the wheel. The problem with this configuration is that the seat is stuck high and high CM... So it's not good for shorter riders. The nice thing is that you can quickly remove the battery pack and the seat which will be the first things that get stolen in the wrong neighborhood.

Dahon Speed P8 / Crystalyte 405 rear motor / 20A controller / CA plugin / Cruise control / 36V / 10Ah / NiMH / Top speed is about 24mph (38.5kph) / Range is quite variable. It still folds nicely.

Very cool. I love my Dahon Jetstream P8. The Speed P8 is a sweet ride as well.

Do you have a photo of the bike folded?

How much more does the bike weigh now? Are you approaching the load limit on the Dahon with the added weight of yourself and the battery gear?

Juiced Riders

The bike as pictured including removable things like basket, rack, kickstand is 25.5kg/56.5lb but the weight balance is quite good considering rear motor.

Folded, it looks just like stock Dahon since the controller is inside the frame and you just remove the seat.

It could be up to the weight limit, but this is a very stiff steel frame. We pounded an earlier Dahon e-bike conversion and even off road runs -it never flinched, the wheels broke first.
