I've named a couple of mine after other inanimate objects. The Simcoe city-bike is the Xebec, named after a kind of sailing ship, a light freighter; it's equipped with a Wald 520 basket set which has brought groceries home. The Day 6 I call the Buick, because it's smooth, quiet, and comfortable.

I have a GreenSpeed Anura (recumbent delta trike) on order; don't know if I'll give that one a name or not.

In 2019, I came into possession of a Technium frame & fork, that, to put it mildly, had done been rode hard & put up wet. The paint on the aluminum main triangle was absurdly faded and flaking off, and the fork & stays put the "P" in "patina". Regardless, my having an idea that my son might like to ride to school on a bike that wouldn't be alluring to thieves, I rebuilt it with good basic components as a street bike.


When my son saw it, he took one look, said, "That bike would give me tetanus", and never touched it.

I ended up selling it to another person in my riding group, and he loves it. Light weight, faster than it looks, comfortable, and reliable.

And the name I bestowed upon it was carried on by its next owner: "Uglybike".

I'm inclined to not even naming pets. If my wife didn't do it, they would just be called dog.

The only reason I name my bikes is to track their separate mileage on Strava. I don't want to list the actual bike models and advertise them for bike thieves.

My steel road bike was Ferreous Bueller (get it? ferreous). My commuter bike was the Fred Sled. My race mountain bike was The Hammer of Thor. My first 11-speed bike was The Nigel Tufnel Special. Etc., Etc.

Nope not a namer. I am pretty attached to a couple of them, but still don't name them.

That's pretty much why I named mine. It allows me to keep straight how much mileage each has accumulated. This is my 2022 summary, for example.


"Old Tom" = early 90s Ritchey Road Logic, for years my Go-To bike. Still a favorite. Named after Tom Ritchey.
"BBBB" = "BIg Bad Black Bianchi", a 2006 Bianchi 928. It's black.
"Dreadnought" = early 90s Battaglin frame made of MAX tubing. Build like a battleship. Hence the name.
"Jackhammer" = 1994 Cannondale R500. 3.0 series Aluminum frame. If you've ridden one the name makes sense,
"Kippers" = 2020 Canyon Endurace. Name comes from the TV show "Red Dwarf" - EndurACE, like Ace Rimmer, whose tagline is "Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast"
"The Mighty Schwinn" = 1989 Schwinn Circuit. Like The Mighty Quinn
"Mrs. Peel" = 1982 Lotus Supreme. Name is because Mrs. Peel drove a Lotus, and because of the flaking paint when I acquired her.
"Colin" = 1982 Lotus Classique. Named for Colin Chapman, founder of Lotus cars.
"Deadman" = 1985 Centurion Ironman. This was bike number 9. "Number 9" made me think of the Beatles "Revolution #9", where "Number 9" is repeated over and over. But if you play it backwards, it sounds like "Turn me on, Deadman"
"Wizard" = 1995 Litespeed Ultimate. When I first got it, every time I went over a sharp bump, the flared handle of the frame pump would strike the top tube, which would ring like a bell. Once, riding over a rough stretch of pavement, it kept ringing, and I said to myself, "Sounds like a damn pinball machine!", hence "Pinball Wizard", hence "Wizard".

Funny thing is, after putting all that thought into such a silly enterprise, I don't think of them by those names. I call them, "the Ritchey", "the Litespeed", etc. Except Mrs. Peel.

I named mine after Toshiro Mifune's masterless samurai in the Akira Kurosawa movies that Leone plagiarized for his spaghetti Westerns. And for the Continental Op in the Dashiell Hammett novels that Kurosawa plagiarized for his samurai movies.

I do not give my bikes human names or nicknames. I think this is because my bikes are tools to get me from one place to another and I don't think of them as having personalities.

It would have to be way too small, with a rear wheel so out of true that I have to open the brakes AND tie one of the caliper arms to the seatstay with string to stop it rubbing on the rim.

I call my bikes by the manufacturer name. The Trek, the Fondriest, the Bianchi. Tre boring.
