Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Man, I’ve got 255s in front with 305s in back. Even my wife’s SUV has 195s in back. Can never have too much meat.

But, it is fun to break the booty free when you want to.

That turbo lag will bite you! One thing I did learn about rear engine cars is when they break loose the car goes where the rear end goes. It's a different thing than a front engine car..

Don't they just go the same way they were already going, regardless?

The heavy end wants to go in the direction it's going. When a rear-engine car loses traction with the rear tires while cornering, it can be problematic in a hurry.

The physics of this is why you drive nails by holding the HANDLE of a hammer and swinging the HEAD, not the other way around.

Applying that “logic”, you’d have to drive the rear engine car backwards.

Nonetheless, there is nothing more satisfying than tooling along at a sedate 70, hitting the gas, and feeling that big butt squat down and push.

The magic of the older 911s is that when you hit the brakes to slow down in the middle of a corner, you're unweighting the rear end, which reduces your traction. Then, the heavy rear end tries to swap places with the front end. Traction control technology has largely minimized this issue.

You don't HAVE to, but Porsche has spent A LOT reducing the relative mass of the hammerhead and/or moving that mass into the handle.

Yes, I remember reading an article where someone was in a fast car being followed by a Porsche he couldn't shake. His copilot said, "Just speed up a little". Sure enough, the Porsche kept right up with him until the rear end suddenly let loose.

Well, the first thing they did to address it was develop an all wheel drive option. Then, the developed electronic systems that maintained power to the rear even when the throttle was lifted, among other things.

But, the 911s have retained a design that puts a lot of weight on or behind the rear wheels. Their is very little weight in front even in the modern cars if you stay away from the four wheel drive versions.

The Cayman is actually a better handling car that is much easier to drive fast with its mid-engine.

Its pretty hard to swap ends in a modern car. Unless you turn PSM off. Only idiots do that.

Consumers will never let them stop building 911s.

If I recall, Porsche's first all-wheel drive was the 959. Correct?

Yes, in 1986.

1998 964 C4 was the first mass produced car.

Idiots have access to power we never dreamed possible when I was a ute, AND they often have access to Traction Control off switches....

The 928 was supposed to spell the end of the 911. They will never stop making it, but it has grown and changed a lot recently. The current 992 is a pretty big car, and dwarfs the air cooled models.
