Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm in Asheville and wouldn't have any problem checking out the riding in Morganton, have to be on a Wed or Thurs though since those are my days off.

found a ride called the 'Glen Bridge 51' that could work: see cue sheet here. (ride #4)

starts in arden, good distance (51m) to make the day worthwhile, and not severely hilly....

saturday, october 15th? (sorry watchman, but i'm a slave to the work week!)

edit: talked to a bike shop in asheville (well, a person who worked there, not the shop itself...) and got interested in some other rides out of there, especially the 'back door to marshall' and the 'bear creek loop' that are listed at the link above in the asheville section....

The Glen Bridge rides start right by house, I know the routes in that area pretty well. I'm definately out for that day since I'll be running a marathon the next day. But let me know if you need route picking assistance.

I saw Morganton in the message and it brought me out of a serious lurk. My wife & I ride a Tandem in Morganton and we've got some good long loops that go around Lake James and avoid most of the big traffic. Morganton is great because there are so many roads that are hardly traveled.

We meet at Freedom high school at 5:30 and ride up to the firestation at about 6:00 to join up with anybody else that shows there to go around Lake James and then back to Freedom for a total of about 35 miles. Its a great ride. We do this ride each Wednesday until it starts to get too dark in the evenings. See ya there tonight!!!

Was debating between Tour de Leaves and Tour de Pig.........Have done that one and it always has a good turnout and is a pretty quick metric.

Anyone have any details on the TdL that they can share on the route, climbing, etc?

I am doing Tour de Leaves. My uncle lives in Kings Mtn. and I'm going down next weekend to do the ride. I've also ridden with the Gaston Country Cyclist guys and they do have riders of all levels...
