Can you all give me a hand figuring something out.

So Im trying to figure out what bottom bracket Im needing for my 1980 412 trek. I took apart the bottom bracket to clean it since the bearing cages were destroyed and can't for the life of me remember which one I was using. Im wanting to get a sealed bottom bracket, for now I'll be using the original SILSTAR 40-52 double crankset, I have a 6 speed Shimano freewheel in the rear. I tried looking through older threads but I have been all over the place trying to figure out what size I will be needing.

Here is the SILSTAR 40-52 crankset I'm using

So maybe you all can help. Right now I have a Bottom bracket marked

CRMO3Z
MTBS511

And the other bottom bracket I have.

Try to remember - when you removed it, did you remove BOLTS or NUTS?

Do/did you have either one of the pre 81 730/530 bikes?

I have a 730- it was built as a 736- I was hoping my TX-700 was going to ride like the 730- but longer. The TX700 is definitely more stiff-especially in the front end.

Oddly enough, my most aggressive bike is my 86 400 Elance- if that had a stiffer fork...

Nice 82 750! I have an 82 710. Does anyone know the differences between the two? Besides the obvious of course. I altered mine after it was stolen and the top tube cable guides were crushed. I replaced the guide braze ons, added the second water bottle braze on and the down tube shifter braze ons.

Looks like yours has these too but where they factory options? Also my chain stays might be longer.

My '80 414 has a SR crank on it. The total width is 141, measured in situ. I have a Silstar crank hanging on the board. The Silstar is roughly 7mm narrower than the SR. Both cranks are doubles. Perhaps useful information; perhaps not.
Edit: The OEM crank is nutted

No, I've never had either of those. I think the reason I prefer the 640 is because the 750 is more of a racing geometry and more sensitive to steering inputs. I'm getting a little old for that nonsense

I think the main differences are that the 710 is classified in Trek's touring range (according to the catalog on the Vintage Trek website. the 750 has racing geometry and the lighter steel also. The all the braze ons on mine are as described in the catalog, they're the standard parts.

1983 Trek 700

I posted this before, but am now pretty satisfied with the setup. The Trek 700 was a 1983 only model. It was in kind of a gray area between sport with the full 531 tubing and sport/touring with the slightly relaxed geometry. Another poster purchased one at about the same time as I did. His build leaned more toward the sport side while mine is more to the sport touring. He is probably younger than I am. Plenty of touch up paint was used on this bike, so not pristine, and a bit dirty.

531 tubing throughout

Superbe components

Being an older guy, the 52/42 was a bit much for me, and I live in the flatlands, so I went with a 45/42 half step setup with a 14-30 freewheel in back. It gets me fairly low gearing, and the half steps come in at about 1mph difference which is kinda nice. Might as well have more useful gears and I didn't want to part with the pretty crank unless a nice Sugino Mighty Tour 110bcd popped up. Rear derailleur was missing at purchase. The medium cage Suntour VX-s works nicely with things.

modified brake lever for mirror

The Panaracer Gravel Kings in 32mm ride real nice. They are plump on the 20mm rims and at 60psi front and 65 rear I like the ride. Perhaps a Technomic taller stem in the future, but as I have a couple of more laid back bikes, this one is for a bit more aggressive riding. Not aggressive like you young guys, but for me, so perhaps the stem will stay. The bars I added are the Nitto Olympiad with more of a flat top area more parallel to the drops too. The frame feel to this non expert is lively/sporty but still stable. It is a fun ride and a bit of a rare 1 year model that I just stumbled upon a couple years ago.

Swan song, sold this bike last week, I liked the fit and ride but it duplicated a bike I already have and my storage in an apartment is finite. I am sure I will miss it but the buyer is going to ride it and use it and was happy to find it and with me it would probably languish in my spare bedroom and I think I got more for it in this market than I would have a year ago.

Here is my Trek 420. I had put this for sale , only later to retract it. I love the colors. When I got it, it had not dents. All dents are from my basement clogged from the pile of bikes. I am thinning the herd now - already sold 4 bikes. I still have more.

One of my favorite colors for bikes honestly. And your basement full of bikes has given this Trek actual dents? Geez!

I should have wrote "scratches" and not dents. The bike has no dent. I see it gave you a heart attack :-)

I rode this for a lot of years and a lot of miles. I took it down to the frame replacing everything on it, including the fork. Reduced the weight by 7 or 8 lbs, ending up around 21 lbs when it was all said and done. Not very pretty as some of these bikes, but it worked for me and I ended up selling to a kid that needed some transportation after I got a new bike for commuting.

"For the record," my '85 620 in the 25.5" size. It now sports an 11-28T cassette out back (along with a new chain that is long enough) instead of the 11-23T I had to use with the then-current-length chain. Gorgeous blue and a superb ride quality, without giving up any speed in any situation. An accidental Grail Bike for me (I bought the frame, fork, headset, and canti brakes) and I couldn't be happier. Now if it would only stop raining!

Picked this up from a pawn shop about 20 mins away. They had posted it up on offerup.
I have a 1980 412, I know this is basically the same frame but with mounts for cables and a water bottle.

It has 022 tubes, Suntour cyclone front derailleur, Suntour SL rear derailleur, SR Stem and bars, Silstar cranks but has a different non drive side crank arm.
27x1 1/4 wheel set, the front wheel is a crappy hub laced to a weinmann rim. Rear has a gyro master laced to not sure what rim as the sticker is gone.

I believe this is a 82.
serial looks to be M2E5490
