I remember years ago at Genentech, there was a growing number of non-PhD folks like me, Senior Research Associates (then), who had 8-10 years of lab experience and wanted to continue to take on more responsibility, etc. This conflicted with the academic model that PhDs are the only "real" Scientists. One of the higher ups in Research infamously said, "Why would we want to retain a Senior Research Associate, when we can hire 3 kids fresh out of college for the same salary?"
Of course, what he discovered was that 3 kids fresh out of college don't know what they're doing, and end up needing more supervision, and are less productive.

After that guy quit the manager did something stupid and I told the owner's son that I didn't think the manager was the right guy for the job. Owner's son (he hired the manager) tells me that I don't know enough to judge whether my boss is a good manager and he would have known right away if the guy couldn't hack it. OK. Turns out when they finally did fire the manager months later they found out how bad he was. He was hiding paperwork and had no idea how to do his job.

Any of you over 50 types who are reluctant to get your colonoscopy, let me tell you its a piece of cake. I was reluctant and today I had one and an Endoscopy and it was painless. A routine dental appointment is worse. Get it done!
Oh, my colon was so clean you could eat off of it! My next one is in 7-10 years.

It's amazing how out of touch some management can be. This is sometimes a product of nepotism. One of the managers I had was a total fraud and we all knew it within weeks. One day he chastised an electrical specialist for parking his car in the shop in the stall of a guy who was on vacation. Guy figures he'll move the car when he goes to lunch but the manager came back to see it was still there and took the technician up to his office to threaten him. "I can replace you in an instant" he said. Tech responds "Good luck with that" and quits. I think it was 8 or 9 months before they found someone and the new guy wasn't close to the other.

I think the bike boom is over. Was at the local Trek shop, and they have several 2021 bikes in common sizes marked down 25% that have been sitting for months. Their 2022 road bikes are not moving either with basically the same stock they’ve had since May. Same with nice, late model bikes on CL and FB - sitting with the prices asked doing nothing but dropping.

I am currently in Grayling MI. For the Black bear grand fondo, tomorrow. As I normally do I am sleeping in a tent tonight to show the God's I am pure of heart and worthy. Also guess who forgot his sleeping bag....
General dollar to the rescue...hopefully. I bought an inexpensive comforter, blanket and pillow. I want to be well rested when I get popped on the first climb. Going down to 47 tonight.

Hmmm. I wonder how many rectangular towns there are...
