Old Frame, no Derailleur Hanger
I have an old frame that used a claw type derailleur. Unfortunately no hole to mount a derailleur hanger on the dropout. I can easily drill and tap a hole. Would having someone braze the hanger in place be overkill? Its getting new paint so no worries about torching the paint

Why not just get a claw to mount the derailleur? Is there something unusual about either the dropout or the derailleur that precludes this?

Should be fine.
The plus side is no retaining nut means that modern high number cassettes won't have interference issues between the small cog, chain, & the frame/hanger nut.
You might braze on a hanger to both sides & remove the unneeded bit on the NDS so that both dropouts are the same thickness (8-9mm-ish) so that long axle nubs & QR's play nicely.

Aha! Got it. Yes, I was going to get a claw, need to drill a hole in the dropout to secure it. I was thinking braze a claw onto the existing dropout, but that makes no sense, you would just braze in a new dropout.

You shouldn't need to drill any hole. Claws mount into the dropout slot:

Posted this fix over 12 years ago. I have done this on three bicycles and they are all working fine. I run 34T Cogs on my freewheels so I needed a longer hanger.

I also recently "discovered" that even among these two types, not all claws are the same length, and I was able to get a RD to work with a larger freewheel by going through the bin at my local bike co-op to find a 6mm longer claw to get the RD to sit further from the sprockets.

I face the same issue with my most recent acquisition, the 1962 Carlton Franco-Suisse, which surprised me by never having had a derailleur hanger. For starters I plan to use the SunTour VGT and claw that were on it when I got it.
