No longer lurking here. I ride in the Stokes/Forsyth/Surry County area. Just 12 miles from the foot of Pilot Mountain.

Hello Voodoorada,
Welcome from High Point.
Which do you think is a harder climb? Pilot or Hanging Rock?

Hi wanders. Pilot is definitely harder. HR has only one spot over 10% grade, and the turns are wide and gradual. Pilot has several 15%+ pitches, and lots of leg-crushing switchbacks. HR is a BLAST to ride back down, though.

I agree. The reason I asked is I have never climbed HR fresh. I have always ridden up from High Point, so I have only climbed it with 40+ miles under me and wondered if it was the grind getting there or the climb that made it seem harder. I usually drive somewhere close to Pilot and climb it a couple of times. I put on a compact last spring and it has helped quite a bit. Last time I was at Pilot Mt., the guy Iwas riding with was so heavy on the brake that his back rim became overheated and he melted/blew out the sidewall about 200 yards from the bottom. And somehow managed not to wreck! Lucky.

My favorite sign on HWY 52 is the one that says "King Tobaccoville"... lol
Hi, welcome to the forums. I'm from Mt. Airy, my brother lives in King.
I've spent many many years in your neck-o-the-woods.
Sauratown is a great place. I've climbed Moore's Wall a few times.
Pilot is great too, or "Nature's Nipple" as I like to call it...
