Sportrack Crest 2 rack

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sportrack Crest 2 rack

Just moved to a new area where we are at the top of a long, high grade hill, so we are looking for options for running our bikes down the hill mostly.
At most, and very occasionally, we would maybe transport them 10 km (6 miles) to some nearby trails.
We have an Audi A5 Sportback and a 2021 Tesla Model 3, so I think we are stuck with hitch type, as we don't really want roof racks.
A local shop here said that my idea of a Sportrack Crest 2 Locking Hitch Platform System Bike Rack was unwise, as it would damage my 2016 carbon Giant Defy Advanced 3?
Our hybrid bikes are Specialized - an Ariel and a Crosstrail
I was told that "If any of the bikes are carbon fiber frames i would recommend bare minimum price wise the Saris Superclamp EX 2 biker. It mounts front to back on the tires so no frame contact to not damage paint or the Carbon frame. It goes for $675. There is also the Thule T2 classic but the ones on backorder at this time. Sportrack is just not a bike rack I recommend for any customer just because short/long term every customer ends up returning for either the lack of ease of use or the damaging of bikes."
Anyone have experience with this? I don't really want to spend twice the money for limited return.
We live in an area where I find retailers are used to people telling them that "money is no object" - or at least that seems to be the case so I am always leery of their recommendations...

I haven't had to use a rack with my Tarmac. But I see no reason not to use the same rack I did with my Paramount that simply hangs it on it's top tube.

If you have a bike that you can squeeze the tubes between your fingers and feel some give, then maybe they need special care. Are there any bikes with tubes like that?

And how far are you going with these bikes in the rack? A few miles from home or a trip from coast to coast on who knows what road conditions?

If you can find the now-discontinued Saris Thelma, that would be a good option for a no-frame-contact, super-lightweight, not super expensive hitch rack.

We used one for years on a Prius to deliver rental bikes in the SF Bay Area, and beyond.

This site claims to have the Saris Thelma 2 in stock.

Exactly. As I said, a kilometer down the hill maybe, at max about 6 kilometers.
I clamp the carbon tube of the Giant in my Park Tool bike stand all the time with no issues? It seems solid.
