I'm not sure it's worth noting that there are scammers on ebay. Next thing you'll tell me there are scammers on craig's list

Thanks for posting this.
I just found out that I won a huge amount of money in a South African lottery that I don’t recall having even entered.
Anyways, once I pay the taxes and receive my winnings I will be looking for a new bike so this info will be helpful as I would hate to get scammed.

What's the scam? The completely misleadingly garbage bikes?

That it's somehow got 26" and 700C wheels? That it only weighs 18kg?

It's a legitimate bike, if you buy it it'll turn up but it'll be the worst bike you've ever used.

It's also not unusual for sellers on eBay, craigslist and elsewhere to have no real clue whatsoever about the things they are selling.

More than one of them just get random inventory from state surplus auctions, unpaid storage sales and other places hoping to make a profit putting reselling them.

Where is the scam now? It’s a cheap bike. You get what you pay for.
And poor English doesn’t mean it’s a scam neither. There are people born outside of the US who didn’t grow up speaking English. Imagine that.

I get what you're saying, but I do think a mismatch between the effort put into the appearance of the ad and the quality of the copy is a good indicator of a scam. Someone seems to be developing a very weird style of listing involving badly photoshopped cheesecake and weirdly specific yet completely incompatible claims about the bike. The worst was listing one of these as a full suspension mountain bike.

If you pay for one of these, you probably will get some sort of bike, so it may not be a scam in that sense but since we know that some of the claims about these bikes are mutually inconsistent, we do know they're obviously false advertising.

Does poor english mean they don't know the diff between 26" and 700c?

That's hardly a scam. It's not like there is a price premium for 26" tire bikes. That's just a common mistake. If you measure the outside diameter of a 700c tire it would be around 26".

Actually what we call a 700c has a bead seat diameter of 622 and and a 26" wheel is 559mm, that is about all you can count on, Most 700c tires would measure between something like 27-29", depending on if it's a skinny tired road bike, hybrid, etc.

That's fine. I suppose it would be like someone selling a car that posted it has a V 8 then saying it's a 6 cylinder. If you want to buy sight unseen from a vendor like that, it's all good, but most of us will not

It's more likely someone who's bought a huge pile of cheap bikes on consignment and doesn't know anything about bikes. If you don't know much about them you wouldn't assume 700c was a wheel radius when the other sizes are specified in inches.\

I'm not defending these bikes; they are the cheapest junk imaginable and are borderline dangerous, but they are 'real' bikes.

GCN has done a few videos using the Eurobike (the cheapest bike available on Amazon) which is essentially one of these, and it seems to work fine (for a heavy steel framed 26" mountain bike with off brand parts and road bars)

Silly bears, they are eBay listing numbers, not phone numbers.
Sez so right next to 'um.
No wonder you are a bit wary, weally wary.
Amazon and eBay are getting loaded with gotchas, fakes, counterfeits, hidden charges.
nothing new , but getting worse. These ones were so bad, it hurt, and sadly snare folks

I realize they are eBay auction numbers. But who posts auction numbers and not a link to the auctions?

John

I can read, but that does not change the fact that when I clicked on them my phone wanted to dial them as phone numbers. Comprendes, Boo-Boo?
