Univega Viva Sport Serial Number? Was it made by Miyata?

Hello,

Is there a list somewhere that anyone knows about that shows the serial numbers and years Miyata made the Univega Viva Sport?

I'll be looking at one this weekend and would really like to make sure I'm getting one that's been made by Miyata.

Any info you might know about would be much appreciated.

This is going to be my first road bike and I really wanted to get a Miyata made Univega.

Thank you so much for your time and help,

Mark

If you want to be sure to get a Miyata made bike, why don't you buy a Miyata?

I've been an admirer of the Univega brand for awhile and also really love things from Japan so I thought it would be nice to find a Japanese model for that reason as well as the great things I've read about Miyata's construction of the bike.

Any info about ways to identify the Viva Sport being made by Miyata would be greatly appreciated.

Did all the Univega's made by Miyata always have the diamond in the lugs? Is this true for the Viva Sport model? Can it still be a Miyata without the diamonds in the lugs?

Is there always a "Made in Japan" sticker to be found on the seat tube?

If it has the Lawee Design sticker near the crank is it made by Miyata?

Is there a starting serial number to look for that indicates the years Miyata made the Viva Sport?

Thanks again for your time and help with this. I'm excited to be on the hunt for this bike.

There is an old thread on this. Use the search function on the top right of the page. There used to be a poster that knew all there was to know about Univegas. I believe his user name was T-mar.

Not all Miyata brand name bicycle frames were made by Miyata of Japan.

The best and possibly only way to tell if a Univega brand bicycle has a frame made by Miyata is from the serial number. If you post the serial number I can tell you if it has a Miyata serial number format and the approximate model year.

Thank you Hummer! I was able to get the serial number from the seller. Here it is NS45209.

Hi Mark,

yes, this is a Miyata serial number. The letter 'N' means that the frame was made in 1985. The model year of the bicycle is most probably 1985 or 1986.
