This poor 85 RockHopper
Our county dump has a Last Chance store. I found this in the bike section. For 10 bucks I thought I would bring it home. Not sure what I will do with it yet but it stands a better chance with me than where it was.

I know that those Suntour bar end shifters are quite valuable these days.
I wish the dump where I live had a store like this because someone dumped a nice Trek there but it is illegal to even touch the bikes that is thrown away.

Liberal lubrication, new chain, cables, pads, bar and saddle. Sell SunTour shifters for flat bar bits. Install rack that holds panniers.
Presto, a genuine classic Rockhopper that you can use as a grocery beater without fear of it getting ripped off.

That appears to be the splitting image of my Rockhopper. Mine's a few years newer, but same drop outs, same angles (to my untrained eye) are you going to try to go back semi stock or are you going to ratrod/restomod it?

I bought Rockhoppers in the mid 1980's for my children. All three are still in action for grandchildren. One was stored in a barn for 20 years. Over time I got it cleaned up and later spent two hundred for new shifters and rear end. Another one my son did a total restoration for his child. The other never was not used and remains pretty much as purchased. The bike are not worth much and worth ever penny spent on restoration at the same time.

What are the chances the seat post and stem aren't stuck? It is so faded it must have never spent a day in the shade, but I like the new color.

Ugghh, that one might be too rusty for me and that’s saying something.
I’m loving the idea of a last chance store. Keep stuff out of the landfill/recycling cycle of life and turn it into a useful item.

When I was younger (and oddly living in the Rust Belt), I would buy anything good regardless of rust/condition and I never had anything I couldn't get apart. The only thing that came close was a Schwinn Predator that had obviously spent time underwater. It broke my crankpuller, but I got the cranks off and stem out. In the last 15yrs living the PNW, I've been beaten several times. Enough I would hesitate on this one, unless those Flag cranks are 165mm
