Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Amazing what a little fill and grind will do. I also admire your rattle can skills!

Hold tension with one hand and shift with the other. If it moves in both directions it's good.

Same. And the mosquitoes. You mean one has to have a framed screen built around their pool in order to enjoy a swim? C’mon now. I’ll take Arizona before I take Florida, no humidity or mosquitoes.

If you go Tiagra, you’ll regret not going 105. Treat yourself to a 105 (or Ultegra) equivalent!

I wish I had known you back in the day when I had to put my 77 Celica to sleep.

Just did my fake group ride. There were 2 groups, I rode with the 2w/Kg group which suits me fine. Most of my friends were brave enough to have their video on for the Zoom event. The banter and company made the 2 hours go quickly.

Fake miles better than no miles.

No kidding. When I finished school in ‘84, I went shopping for a new car. When I asked what they would give on trade for my trusty, rusty ‘75 Celica, I was told they would only charge me $50 to dispose of it.

Well that "run" sucked. Getting to rebuild from zero is painful. At least I didn't try to push all the way to 6.

The Mrs is tapping her toe in Atlanta airport. Her 8:00 flight became a 12;22 flight became a 1;06 flight. Isn't air travel fun!? She might now make it home before midnight. Or not.
Last time I flew home from DC, I was there for a 6:30 flight. I finally left at 4 and made it only as far as Dallas. I need to start psyching myself for my upcoming flight, in June. I don't think there will be many more, after that one.

One thing about the Bay Area is there aren't a lot of bugs. It's too dry to support a big population for too long. We get some mosquitoes in late Spring from standing water in tree hollows and such, but not many, and few flies. Bees and yellow jackets, we have, though.

So, because Dory is too light to work the dog flap on the screen door, and Rango bumped his butt going through it and won't even try anymore, we often prop open the screen door open for long periods. We won't be able to do that Back East!

The monthly C&V ride got washed out today. Nobody wants to take their pretty bike out in the slop. I guess it's Zwift for me! That race the other day was fun, notwithstanding having stupidly burned all my matches before the final sprint and only managing 438w average for 13 seconds.

This is why I take long cross-country drives over flights, and no one understands why.

Plus no security or baggage fees.

Ugh. We’re flying during the holidays to see my folks in FL with a toddler. I might as well start drinking now.

I also am heading out tomorrow evening to Vegas for a conference and am taking the red eye back a few days later. Actually, I will start drinking now….

I'm not a big fan of flying, and I like driving, but unfortunately for me a "long cross-country drive" would have to be a REALLY long, ALL THE WAY ACROSS the country drive. So I go for 5 hours vs 5 days. If I had more time, I might feel differently.

Mostly, though, I do neither!

I would have had a measurably more successful academic career if I’d been willing to fly more. LSS has bum joints and decided a few years ago that she was done with economy travel for anything over 4 hrs.

My back doesn’t like a drive of much longer than three hours these days, so other than to see the kids we fly. At a minimum, I’m looking for exit row seats, regardless of time in the sky. For longer flights, I’m looking for first class. It’s amazing how many times you can find that for just a little more than a coach ticket.
