And now for something completely different...
For $1200-2000 electric unicycle will carry <300lbs ~40-60 miles at ~15-25mph on a single charge, varies by mfg/model. Recharges from 10-100% in ~4-8 hrs. Weighs ~40-50 lbs, may air travel easier/cheaper than a bike. Some include app to control lighting, speed regulation, recharging, audible status message, and/or stereo from phone. Seat optional but likely reduces control/safety. Backpack necessary for gear carry.

They'd never let you on the freeway with that thing. They barely tolerate bicycles, sometimes. 😉

That could actually be fun and interesting. I wouldn't replace bike touring with it, but it could be fun for overnighters, or a short week-ish long trip. At 20mph, you could do your whole day in 3-4hrs easily. Recharge for an hour while you're stopped for lunch. I could dig it as a fun occasional trip.

About a year ago I was biking down a bike path for exercise, doing maybe 15 mph and something went past me, probably doing about 20 mph. At first I thought it was some weird scooter with someone standing on it, but the more I think about it I think it might have been one of these electric unicycles. It went past me so fast that I was not really thinking very much about what I saw. The trail was quite flat and straight, pavement in very good condition so it would be an ideal place for something like that to go fast. That trail is on the edge of town, there probably are at least five times as many bicyclists as there are pedestrians so it is a favorite route for roadies to get out of town to get some exercise. Thus, that probably was the safest place around for a high speed electric unicycle.

have seen a few of these here in town.....knuckleheads slaloming lanes in heavy (slow-moving) traffic, and running red lights.
also met one crazy guy on a single wheel scooter thing touring around the island. doing 50km or so a day with a small backpack. would stop at fast food joints for lunch and recharge.
