My son & wife use magic eraser on their leather and faux leather shoes to get marks off. White or any other color. Don't know that it's hurt them at all. They don't sit there and rub forever if the marks don't want to come off.
Me, it's too much effort and I don't mind looking like a slob.

If I only wore those shoes that I'm considering with overshoes, then obviously it wouldn't matter what color they were.
Vermeersch's shoes would probably be what they'd permanently look like after a few rides, as I know I wouldn't have the patience or discipline to clean them. Still tempted by the massive discount, but today I tried cutting back some material from the current shoes that I'm unhappy with to see if that won't be an even smarter (non-)use of money.

I wear white because it's actually cooler in the summer. I will wear white and not really care if they get a bit scuffed, for the same reason I don't worry if I have residue on my jersey from gluing numbers on. They're purpose built items, and I will never wear them to prom.

'cuz they were on sale. They're scuffed now and have some black marks, but it doesn't affect fit. Or how slow I am.

Me too. Black anything biking-related is sooo passe and reeks of conformity.

I have a white pair, just because they were a good price and only available in that color for my size. They have not gotten smudged or stained as quickly as I feared they would; still look good after 2 or 3 years

I bought into the idea of having my shoes be hi-viz, since they are mostly in motion. But, I couldn't make myself wear lime green shoes, so I bought a pair of Sidi white SPD-SL shoes for my road riding. Got caught in the rain a few times, they have not been hard to keep clean - my wife turned me on to someone else's suggest, the "Magic Eraser" sponge deals.

I have white shoes because the sidi speedplay carbon shoes are sold in only one color.
I don't like them. They look like they're made for tap dancing.

I have a pair of white SIDI Genisis because they were used once and a good price on CL.
Wear and tear are not limited to white.
