SunTour Barcons Questions
Can the standard SunTour Power Ratchet Barcons handle a triple crank? Or were they produced in 2 different versions, depending on if you were running a double or triple crank?

I use them on my triples. If there are different versions out there for double/triple cranksets, I was never aware of them.

Ok I will ask what seems to me like a dumb question ... how can you tell which shifter is left and which is right, i.e FD control or RD control.... does it matter if they are friction? I have a set but see no obvious way to tell (he said shamefaced)

The left one says JAPAN and the right one says Japan

They handle triples just fine, as others have mentioned above. No difference front- or rear. They're both the same. I've had mine on this bike since November of '76! I changed from double- to triple crankset ~30 years ago, using the original Compe-V front derailleur.

I feel my leg being tugged a bit as they both have JAPAN spelled in CAPS and Velobase seems to indicate the friction barcons are the same right and left

I ran mine with both double and triple chainrings with no problem - the challenge was getting a Campagnolo Olympus mtb rear derailleur to play nice with the barcons over an 8-speed Campagnolo cluster. I had to have it dialed in just exactly right to get all 8 cogs.

I have yet to meet a friction barcon, friction downtube or friction stem shifter that couldn't handle three rings. When you think about it; it makes sense. Those three rings up front on any given crank are spaced closer together than the most narrow 5-speed cluster on back, so why wouldn't it?
