LA/SoCal peeps - Powder coat recs

I have an acquaintance in LA who is looking to get a couple of steel frames done. I’ve given him some recommendations for out of towners I’ve heard good things about but thought for sure there must be good ones local to him. Anyone?

I wish we had a list like this for both PC and paint, similar to the Facilitators thread, a running index of painters by either region (SE US, NE US, NW US, SE US, Central US, whatever) and/or by state.

There's Sundial in the SF valley (Sun Valley). I know they've done at least a few bikes, but I haven't seen one so I can't vouch for them for frames specifically. They do well with furniture.

Also, Plating Plus (?) in Orange. No experience with these guys, but I know they are there.

I'm sure there's quite a few more. Not everyone is very good.

If these are C&V lug frames someone with lug experience is wise to find. I have had work done and seen work in Portland and Tucson with too much powder thinning at the sharp edges of lugs, BB, etc. That steel color coming through the thin powder on edges doesn't look good especially on lighter colors, like white, yellow, etc.

Hugh, if your buddy has two frames, it might be cost effective to ship the frames to someone, since he'd be amortizing the cost of shipping. You've seen my Groody Brothers powder coats. Mark Rainey there does a great job for a very reasonable price. Shop them against what he can get locally.

I had a frame powder coated in the early 90's by a powdercoater who was advertising for bike frame work - forget the name they were in Chatsworth. Turned out OK - the thinning at the lug edges and or braze-ons is part of the physics at work while heated- there are ways to improve the end results- it takes more time and raises cost- will never approach a wet paint application. But very much cheaper.
my bike so coated needs to be chemically stripped and will then be repainted. Under the coat rust is propagating. Back in the early 90's it was just an obsolete 120mm wide rear triangle, French threaded used bike.

Yeah I already sent him a link to Groodys. The Heron is there right now for refurb. Shipping is expensive at the moment. Cost the same to ship frame/fork to KC as it did for you to ship the whole bike (+ all that extra crap) to me. Anyway I get what you’re saying. I just figured there had to be decent options local in LA. That being said, it might be easier to ship a frame to KC than drive it across LA.

BTW, I bought a Berthoud handlebar bag from this guy, so I’ll be locked and loaded for next tour.

Yeah, what's up with shipping prices? Is LA a vast desert when it comes to powder coaters?

Good to see you've got a bag! You've got half a decaleur, you'll need the bag side from Velo Orange. Now to start that tour planning...SF to Cambria the week before Eroica?

Done. Came with the bag. The VO decaleur will probably go on an around town bike.

Andrews Powder coat is in Chatsworth. Never used them, but I see their truck driving around a lot.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Element 6 in Santa Ana. They do painting, they do decals, they do powdercoating, they work on vintage steel, they even do carbon frame repair. Highly regarded.

Interesting. They don’t list powder coat on their website.

Olympic Powder coating in Santa Ana has done a lot of bicycles and bike parts. They are now called Gemtech Coatings at the same address... 2737 S Garnsey St, Santa Ana, CA 92707. Call them and make sure they still do bikes and bike parts (714) 848-2517.

They touched up wet paint on a Masi for me and it looked fabulous... they had a powder-coated Brompton in their shop and it looked very nice. I'd recommend them...

They do powdercoating for a base price of $150 (see their Pricing page).

Wow I’m getting old, I didn’t see that when I looked at that page before. Thanks everyone!

Ventura County

Bell Powder Coating is in Southern Ventura County. Has done two bikes and a tandem for us. Not perfect but very nice and reasonable cost, if i remember correctly they have a minimum charge for everything that is the same color and will fit in the oven, was $125.00.

Lived in So Cal my whole like and never heard of Element 6. Maybe i was too set on Cycle Art and went to the other well known shops after CA closed. Have a couple of projects i would like to do but shipping has become too expensive to tack on top of the job.

Have you seen or had work by Element 6?

I found it in there. in the pricing pages.
I only recall a reference to them for carbon frame repair elsewhere.
Kind of disappointed that they don't really spec how they evaluate a carbon frame, the tech is out there as used in the marine industry to check the integrity of carbon fibre racing sailboats.

I have not, but the Google reviews are mostly very positive. As with Cyclart, and as with all 1-2 person shops doing paint jobs/restorations, the turnaround is hardly instant and the work may take longer than advertised. It is the nature of the business....
