Caps of that style, that age, and that type of plastic @$$-plode on my more often than not. I don't think they're necessarily torqued down all that tight. I think that kind of plastic just gets really stuck to the crank arm threads over the decades.

I wish it had been plastic. That sucker is steel.

Not to derail, but what is the proper torque for a crank bolt. I usually go with “pretty tight” but I’m beginning to wonder if I’m a gorilla.

I feel your pain, hate when a simple job goes south.

Park Tool says "34 Nm to 50 Nm depending upon brand." I think "pretty tight" is a good approximation. There are some things I use a torque wrench for, but this isn't one of them. I usually go until the bolt stops moving when I lean into it. If the head snaps off, that was a little too much.

I think that would polish right out with a little Simichrome.

I have nothing useful to add but wanted to check in here because this thread has such a wonderful title.

Its a Raleigh stamped Sakae CR. If a match never shows up I may just put it on a sealed bearing hub "semi permanently"

Same here - not to view it for amusement, but just to find a kindred spirit. So many times.....

This is my nightmare scenario. I haven't pulled any threads out (yet,) but I've had a couple that required enough force to get me really worried. I did make the mistake with the washer once, but no damage done and I caught on quickly.
