Caps of that style, that age, and that type of plastic @$$-plode on my more often than not. I don't think they're necessarily torqued down all that tight. I think that kind of plastic just gets really stuck to the crank arm threads over the decades.

Not to derail, but what is the proper torque for a crank bolt. I usually go with “pretty tight” but I’m beginning to wonder if I’m a gorilla.

This is my nightmare scenario. I haven't pulled any threads out (yet,) but I've had a couple that required enough force to get me really worried. I did make the mistake with the washer once, but no damage done and I caught on quickly.
