Addiction 2021.4

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Funeral over. On the way home I thought about going for a bike ride.... Then I laughed! That was a hoot!
it's snowing cold wet and miserable. Yes, V.v., in that order.

One of my club mates who is clearly a serious cyclist hit 15k miles for the year. I am in awe.

So, it might still do all of those, to a lesser degree, and still be useful, especially once boosted. Per Fauci, we should know in a couple weeks how protective the vaccines are against this variant.

The irritating thing is that antivaxxers will use this as a reason not to get vaccinated, whereas in fact it's a compelling argument for vaccination - the fewer highly susceptible people in the population, the lower the rate of replication, and the lower the rate of replication the slower the rate of viral evolution.

Ha. Along those lines, one of my goals this year is to spend enough time that I have a similar familiarity, workflow, and persnickety approach in the woodworking shop.
Sometimes you have to let stuff soak.

My clean as you go is mostly rinse and stick it in the dishwasher. Pots and pans get a hand wash though.

Yes, but not a plate you only used for toast.

If we use a plate for toast it goes in the dishwasher.

We pretty much only hand wash pots, pans, knives, crystal and china.

As one does.

I got out Mrs. GeneJockey's Mom's sterling for Thanksgiving, since it's a set FOR 4, and we were a set OF 4. You CAN put it in the dishwasher, but it gets a coating of whitish oxides.

We each have our own kitchen. They're both full of dirty dishes atm.
My flow in the wood shop has become quite good. Not fast by any stretch, but the flow is good. The bench still gets cluttered but cleans up quickly. There's a mortise marked out and waiting to be chopped as we speak.
In fact it's the wood shop that's keeping me off the bike. I'd rather be in there. I'm replacing our six worn out dining room chairs one by one. It is hoped that the sixth will go faster and more smoothly than the first.

Went looking at some houses with our daughter today in Austin.

The idea of a 1600’ house that is almost 40 years old and listed for $650k is hard for me to swallow.

I was kvetching to my wife about this (whilst imagining it coming from the mouth of my anti-vaxxer SIL) just yesterday.

It’s double or triple that in a good neighborhood in LA. Crazy.

Here in San Mateo, you're talking 2.5-3x that. A few miles South, in Palo Alto, a lot more. This is my retirement plan.

Oh, I know. Seems like crazy money for a starter home, but I know other regions are a lot higher.

To put it in context, I’m comparing to my 12 year old full custom house that is almost three times that size and may cost that much today.

Yeah. I keep finding houses we could easily afford on Zillow that are what I always wanted when I was younger - which turns out to be very much the style of my parents' house - but realizing that the youngest I'll ever be in that house would be 70, and I'll only get less mobile from there, I realize they're not what I should be looking for.

In my hick part of the country, a 40 year old 1600 SF house on a city lot probably goes 200-210k at the most. You have to like corn and beans, though.
