Specialized only via brick and mortar?

I've noticed the two or three times recently I looked online for various Specialized branded stuff, the interwebs shopping comparatives was eerily silent.

Not really. Google Specialized bicycle components. That'll connect you with Specialized Dealer Direct. It's a separate corporation that is 51% owned by participating Specialized Retailers.

Around 12 years ago Specialized formed a partnership with their retailers. The retailers had to agree to represent the Specialized line and make Specialized the #1 or #2 brand in their store. Specialized agreed not to sell through other channels.

On a business trip, I went into a shop and wanted them to ship some Specialized shoes to me. They said no can do, which I thought was kind of bogus. They also said that authorized dealers can sell discontinued items or models mail-order, but not current stuff.

That's OK because lately, though owning a Specialized bike and some other stuff, I have taken a disliking toward Specialized in general... not for any necessarily rational reason...I just don't really like their stuff.

Yeah, I think that it's bogus too. I suspect that whoever you talked to doesn't understand the Specialized business model. Since you were actually in the store, that wasn't a mail order sale.

Heh. I'm with you on shoes. Kind of meh. Helmet and gloves, though, I'll take. I was trying on some gloves, wasting time at the shop, I thought the BG Pro gloves were quite comfortable compared to all the gloves I've tried on recently (my initial thought: "wow: these are fantastic!"), though, $40 is towards the high side of gloves I've seen recently.

I was on specialized.com this morning looking at saddles. Plenty of stuff to pick from.

Shoes are a nuisance to buy mail-order anyway. You need to buy 3 pair - the size that you think you need, one a size larger and one a size smaller. Then return the two pairs that don't fit.
